Only one time have I ever seen any real testing done on a 350Z. I believe the hood tested was a Seibon, with a large symmetrical vent on either side.

The Seibon did not decrease engine bay temps, it actually raised them.

 

No, I don't think so. It's on a buddies car now here in Orlando. It might be on here somewhere if you do a search.

 

I cannot really tell during a drive, but at idle, those vents make me smile seeing all the damn heat rise out of them.

 

Explain that please. How is the atmosphere going to increase the temperature of the engine bay when its at a lower temperature. ( whats a typical engine bay temp?)

Its either do nothing or cool the engine bay.

 

I am going to cut my stock hood and have vents put in.

I am going to have a large one up front to vent the hot air from my radiator and some over the headers since I no longer have heat sheilds on my Strup headers.

The stock hood on the Z is engineered itself to vent out air and keep the engine bay cool.

Aftermarket hoods are designed to sell, to make money, and are not tested.

Just because it looks like it will work better does not mean it will.

 

Well, test the temperatures in your engine bay before, and after.

Just because you 'think' that a hole in your hood at a certain place will cool the engine bay more does certainly NOT mean that it will work that way in the real world, at speed.

 

That doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement or in this case, more cooling. Thats like saying SRT4's don't need a FMIC because Dodge "engineered" it to be cool with the top mount.

Commonsense would tell you UTH temps would drop if the atmospheric temperature was allowed in through gapping holes above the engine bay.

Cooler air+more air flow = lower temperatures

 

Has anyone logged oil temps with a standard hood, then with a vented hood?

 

I fully understand what you are saying but I seem to think that you have no idea what my setup is so you would have a hard time understanding the necessity of my vents.

 

Here's one way a hole in the hood could hinder, rather than help: IF the hood is a high pressure area, due to the fluid dynamics of the air rushing across it at a speed slower than somewhere else (for example, hitting the windshield and rushing back down), air could actually be pushing INTO the engine bay through the holes(s) in the hood, and increasing the air pressure in the engine bay. This would impede airflow into the bay from the front, thus reducing air flow across the radiator (and any front mount IC's or oil coolers), thus increasing oil and water temps.

Granted, I don't think this is the case, but it is a possibility. Fluid dynamics is a tricky thing.

Running Top Secret, they have the vents right above where the headers are located so I would definatly say its functional....

I'd say the best bet is to pm the people that posted up in those threads and see if the still have them. Or ask if someone that has done it would be nice enough to make a new template.
