Nissan has offered a different one-off color option almost much every year the Z has been produced and sold worldwide. I specifically purchased my Z because of the paint + trim level combination and the fact that it was the only IF in Oregon at the time I bought it (rarity). I disagree with your assumption. These factory-warrantied paint options were by no means misunderstood or unwanted for any of the years they were offered. Rarity/Uniqueness is something that is in fact desirable in a sports car, even more so in collector cars.

2003 - Brickyard
2004 - Liquid Aluminum
2005 - Ultra Yellow
2006 - Interlagos Fire
2007 - Solar Orange
2008 - none
2009 - We'll find out soon

*Edit* fixed year/colors

Carbon Silver was offered in 07, but it's not a "custom color" and didn't cost more.
