Default what are these?

I am pointing to the metal with the holes next to the windshield. I was wondering what this was and it's purpose. I have noticed these on race cars and such. Is this just the interior stripped out? Or is this some kind of cage? sorry for the gay thread and noobity.

I believe it's part of the cage. Both the A and B pillars have it. It has holes to make the support structure light and rigid. This technology is applied to aircrafts, boats, and just about everything.
