Blacking out lower center console
Blacked out the lower half of the console. I don't like the chintzy looking silver trim pieces. Dont know if I will do the steering wheel and instrument cluster but for now my plan is to finish the center console, then do the doors, making the door lock rocker buttons red.
The shift **** didn't come out as good as I'd like but I will be getting one of those shortie *****. Had I thought more about it, I would have put a hole up through the bottom and pushed out the top plate rather than pry it out.
Someone in an earlier post mentioned using Dupli-Color, Vinyl and Fabric, flat black spray paint as a good match and I can vouch for that. In the light I was working with it is almost exactly the same. If you have unsightly chips in your finish, I highly recommend it. I had lots of them before.
I did the driver's door control panel, that ended up darker than the arm wrest pad that is to the rear of the control panel so I figure I will paint that to match when I do both doors.
Here's a pic of the lower half of the center console.

did you just paint the silver pieces or the plastic as well?
cause i got some scrathes on my plastic and want to repaint it!
but trying to find a color that matches perfectly!
thanks

In order to do the trim ring around the base of the shift boot, I had to take it competly off which was cool cuz it gave me a chance to clean out all the scrufula that gets down in there.
The piece that has the silver rings around the AC controls comes off of the AC control box without having to mess with the ***** so that was a nice discovery.
If you want to paint the base of the shift ****, I recommend using a very thin flat blade to create a little space between the silver trim piece at the base and the **** itself, then put a little acetone in there and that will loosen up the glue. Then just work the trim piece back and forth while pulling on the shift **** and it will come right apart. If the acetone burns the vinyl on the sides of the base of the ****, it dont' matter cuz it's hidden anway when you put the trim piece back on. I should have used primer on that trim piece as it's pretty smooth, my new paint started to chip off already.
The Duplicolor flat black for vinyl and fabric tured out to be a pretty good match. My thought is that even if it's a little off, once I do the upper console, it will all match anyway.
I'm doin the upper console this coming weekend, can't wait because I have some scratches on the cubby door and some just above the radio. I tried to cover them up by dabbing a sharpie on there but that didn't turn out so good. I'll post before / after pics as an addition to this thread when I do the upper.
