Default Need help with painting a front bumper - cracked & peeled!!

So about 1.5 yrs ago I had an MSA Type & front bumper installed and painted. About 8-12 months later, the paint started bubbling then cracking off exposing the original Urethane yellowish color. I am bringing it back to be repainted and don't want this to happen again. Any suggestions??

Common with urethane.

Very good prep and primer can help.

What Spork said. Paint is only good so long as the prep work is good. Sand your bumpers down well, and a primer coat will even be better.

I would avoid primer(unless needed to block out a repair)! You do not want the mil thickness to build up. The bumper does need to be prepped. Also make sure to degrease it before prep to prevent contaminates form being embedded in the plastic, then depending on the paint system (this could be different based upon the brand of paint always check there recommendations prior to painting) but we use sikkens paint at work you would then seal it and then paint it and make sure to use a flex additive in the base and clear. If you do need to prim the bumper I would also recommend you add flex to the primer but it does make it harder to block out also if you have a Black car I would tint primer Black that way when you get a chip you don't see Grey. If it is Red then tent the primer Red and so forth depending on the color of the car.Hope this helps it should not peal at all if done right!

Also some of the finicky plastic may need 1 coat of a etch primer for adhesion(etch primer is different then a primer filler and wont dramatically affect the mil thickness as described above). There again some paint systems may have a adhesion promoter that must be applied first prior to painting. Always check the manufacturers recommendations1
