A/C control question.....
This might be far fetched but does anyone find it annoying how the air conditioner comes on automatically when you turn on recirculate and put it on auto or anything.
I was driving through a tunnel yesterday and i switched to recirculate and i couldn't have it on without the ac coming on too, and its frikken 23 degrees F outside. It also comes on when i put it on defrost too, so i constantly have to take off the ac all the time.
I have an 03 so i know other people hopefully have the same thing happen to them.
Im assuming there is no way to bypass this is there?

After having just disabled this auto-compressor-on feature on the Fit I am even more interested in finding a way to do this in the Z. I do like the idea of actually being able to control if I want to have the compressor off/on while recircing the air.

However, it still clicks the compressor on (you can hear it) which seems completely unnecessary if I'm going to turn it right back off - especially in conditions like this.
There is something in the factory service manual about the auto AC function, I didn't read it very closely, but it goes in to detail about the function. I would imagine the engineers set it up that way to deal with the way the basic venting is set up. I've noticed without the AC on the air literally feels stale (moreso than any other car I've had) and to combat this along with promoting better defogging the AC conditions the air (hot or cold).
As a side note, did you ever wonder why the car didn't seem to lose a lot of power when the AC was on? Read below for the answer...
(From the FSM)
This system improves engine operation when the air conditioner is used.
Under the following conditions, the air conditioner is turned OFF.

This system improves engine operation when the air conditioner is used.
Under the following conditions, the air conditioner is turned OFF.
- When the accelerator pedal is fully depressed.
- When cranking the engine.
- At high engine speeds.
- When the engine coolant temperature becomes excessively high.
- When operating power steering during low engine speed or low vehicle speed.
- When engine speed is excessively low.
- When refrigerant pressure is excessively low or high.
air conditioning does not mean COLD air, just because you turn your a/c on during summer doesn't necessarily mean its only for cold air. Its the freeon that makes cold air. During winter in conditions the air not cool it.
And the above FSM notes are all true. Ever put your a/c **** in AUTO when you just started the car? It wont blow air till its ready.

Theoretically, if the A/C light is on - wouldn't it still be using the A/C compressor then? Wouldn't that be a waste if it doesn't need to blow cold air?
I'm asking serious questions here... I'm not sure

What I've done in the past is leave the fan in the lowest setting and turn off the AC. Once you turn on the car it will not auto start the AC unless you ask for it or turn on the defogger which mandates the use initially.
I do not know if this is true.....but an engineer once told me that unless you circulate the freon (or whatever) and run the compressor occationally, the system will go bad.
This is why the air conditioner is cycled on (but the air isn't used) during windshield defrost (on certain vehicles).

Next time the conditions allow, try using the defogger with AC on and then off. See which one works the most efficent. Its pretty obvious to me why Nissan did it but I do wish there was a way to easily disable it. The constant on and off of the AC has to be bad on the clutch and compressor.
