I believe that the air duct does have function. Direct unristricted air flow of cold air straight to the intake. The only test I have done is for MPG and I have gained about 10 miles per tank. Based on the sound of my S/C it spools louder as well so it must be doing something....I guess you can out it on a dyno and do a pull with the duct plugged and another pull with it unplugged to see a difference.

It has been done... and if I remember correctly it was someone from these forums. Result: it looks good, underhood temps down some, whp gains well in the margin of error from run to run.
