Default What grit sand paper for panels?

Because of the easy scratches problem on the interior door handle panels of my Z, I am going take them off and re-paint them myself. For those who have done this, what grit sand paper do you recommend?... to take off that "rubbery" coating?.. And did you guys prime the panel before painting it?

I just use 1000 grid and scuffed it lightly. Then shot some primer and black paint for now. And im just going to order the carbon fiber ones.
