Default opinions on painting/smoking tailight

i think the thing i like least about my car has to be the tailights. now i have an idea and would like to know if any one has tried it, i couldnt find any using the search button.

i want to paint the reflector red to match the car, leaving only the tailight itself, then smoking that like most people do. i know i will have a line from the clear but there are ways to minimize that. but has anyone ever done that? or will that take more work than its worth?

I have mine done, but also black roof, black wheels, black headlights housings, black reflectors, and black door handles all on a Daytona Blue Z.

It just doesnt look right on a stock car. And hell, the red lights already match your car.

Get some 06+ LED's instead, not a fan of tinting taillights unless it's on the JDM-version clear LED"s.

Job well done on those tail lights SmoothZ! Wise choice on painting them properly.

I think it really depends on the vehicle theme itself... overall though I am never really a fan of smoked tails Just my .02 though.

Yeah, dark is not good. I wanted something to contrast a little with the white. It looks really good in person.

Thanks for the props.

So If I was gonna black out my taillights, should I just use tint or what looks best? I'm going for a complete blackout on the ride, since my car is already black. I think the rims might be the only thing I dont completely blackout.

I guess I've never heard of painting the headlights black. I always thought people just just tinted.

^^^ +1. There are some exceptions that are well done but generally speaking l I think it makes the car look cheaper.

EDIT:forgot the 3rd Z in WaiZZZ
Waizzz man, leave me alone!!! My tails are too dark because a fly landed in my 3rd coat and I had to sand it down and put 2 more on each light! STOP YELLING AT ME!!!!

OP, Dont do any taping off or drawing shapes in your lights or anything. just spray the whole thing.. I used a spray called NiteShades(careful its REAAAAAAAALLLY thin paint) and practice on spare lights if you have them

SmoothZ, i like your ppw/black tails look too same thing I have only my emblems are black too

Lil dark, but it kinda grew on me

Here are mine, Nightshades FTW. Seems like they are popular on PPW.

I just finished doing the bumper cover tuck when this pic was taken. The homemade ramps help out also when trying to get a jack under the car to work on the monster. Best $12.00 investment for working on the Z car.
