Shaving a steering wheel? Reshaping?
Real quick, I've been researching having my wheel re-wrapped, found out steering wheels can be shaved at the bottom (which I love), as well as reshaped apparently with some kind of epoxy or resin?
So these questions, and thanks in advance for taking any time to help, appreciate the assistance in a sincere way.
I'm wondering:
How much does it cost to have a wheel shaved so it's flat at bottom?
Anyone know of a bargain but quality source for doing this?
Reshaping I see is apparently expensive, but I've heard of guys doing it on their own with some kind of epoxy buildup? Can someone guide me on this or to a resource that teaches this a bit? I'm up for buying a beater wheel and trying this out, then having the wheel wrapped. It's a lot of work I understand, but I plan on keeping the Z for years, so I don't mind a few weeks of tinkering to have something that will give me a daily improvement for years to come.
Anyone know of a bargain but quality source for shaping a wheel? I want it to look like a higher end BMW wheel, or the VW GTI wheel I think looks similar to what I'm after, and I want my stock Z wheel made thicker as well, although I know that can be done with padding at the time of rewrapping leather to the wheel.
All info really appreciated, as I love the Z, but a high end steering wheel would raise the caliber of the interior a number of notches.
Thanks guys,

IMO,think it would be alot less trouble and chances of screw up if you just
bought a wheel that looked like what you want. There are tons of wheels out
there with adapters.
It all depends on the bucks you have to spend or if you want it to be "right"
not turn out looking like something in a ricer.

Points well taken, but everything I've seen so far points to the cost being $800 to have my wheel shaped with thumb rests, thumb grooves and maybe shaved and then have it recovered.
Can't bring myself to spend that much when there are so many other things that I could put that money toward.
Aftermarket wheels cause you to lose the airbag, so I've ruled all those out, otherwise yeah, there are some nice wheels for reasonable prices. Wish I could do this route.
I'm confident I can do it once I learn the technique, I'll endure it ONCE heh to get what I want...but I'm sure it will be a lot of work. Will not end up being rice. I'll start over and keep trying if I have to, but I've yet to meet the project that can't get completed one way or another. Generally just need a little help and it all comes together.
Thanks for the posts, anyone know of where I might learn how to do this? Or have at least the shaving done? Gotta be some people that can share a little insight. PM me please if any of this is kept from public forums? Just want to make one wheel and love it.
