I just bought a 2007 350Z and the clear and supposedly unnoticeable tape protective strip that is directly below the bottom rear of the rag top, is not only very discolored but also very puckered, wrinkled and majorly ugly. I plan on removing that strip, cleaning up the paint and gunk that's under it an putting on a new one, but I am wondering if anybody else has done that and what would be the best thing to help me achieve the removal without messing up the paint. I plan on using a hair dryer or heat gun on a low setting to soften up the glue, but I am wondering if there's any kind of solvent that might loosen up the grip and soften up the hardened tape. I am afraid to try things that could remove the paint, too....so I'm hoping somebody out there has a proven working method that will allow me to be proud of the outcome. Right now, that's all I see in my rearview mirror when I put the top down and it's embarrassingly ugly and it's got to go...

Am I to believe that nobody else has ever had to replace this protective strip on all the years the 350 Z has been out there?

Well, in my small town, I do not think we have a 'wrapping place, plus I really prefer to do my own car work. I was just hoping that I could benefit from somebody else's experience so I didn't have to reinvent the best way to do it. Likewise, if there was some super easy method, such as a softening solvent that I could use, that might bake the removal so much easier, with less chance of messing up the paint underneath. I appreciate the advice though, and I may still have to do that if I cannot make it happen myself.
