<chuckle> juhko, just read your post again... I wasn't using the gold as a marketing item for the bling of it (although it does stand out nicely from the black PCBs), I'm using the gold from a corrosion resistance standpoint. Sure, it may only be $0.03 of gold on each board, but that's $0.03 of protection from moisture, preventing the need to spend another $45 for a replacement Mini a year down the road.

MacGyver do you have pics of the footwell tubes? How many LEDs are incased in them and what is the length in inches?

Would this tube be suitable for lighting up a trunk?

Thanks,
Victor

Vic,

The electronics for the Footwell Tubes are scheduled to arrive at the end of the month (crossing my fingers), so unfrotunately no pics as of yet.

The tubes will be 0.75" in diameter and roughly 2" long. 2 LEDs per tube, same as the Mini lights. In fact, the two pieces look roughly the same, but the tube boards are a little longer to deal with the extra inputs.

The Tubes or Minis are ideal for the trunk, probably more so the Minis because you don't need the extra inputs (so why pay the extra money).

The typical order I've received so far has gone basically like this:
2 x Footwell Tubes
1 x Brakelight Tube
2 x Minis w/Socket Module for maplights
2 x Minis for trunk
2 x Tubes for grille
4 x Minis for engine bay (hood liner)

I'm only able to fill the orders for Minis at the moment, but I know I'll be spending a few days doing nothing but filling Tube orders once those come in.

Dragon,

The Minis measure a tad smaller than 1.3" x 0.6" x 0.25", so you can stick them in some pretty tight spaces. Due to their small size and very thin outline, they also work quite well as edge lighting for plexiglass structures, such as sub boxes or logos.

I just received a new batch of LEDs in, so I'm ready to make as many as you need. Every night I tend to make a handful of them, and they're usually spoken for by the following night. I have about 20 drying in front of me at the moment.

<shrug> Oh well...
I'm definitely interested, but I'd like to hear how some of my comrade's installs go before I commit. Those are pretty darned cool IMO

Yes, of course, but you know, just in case.....

I was just informed the electronics for the Footwell Tubes and Brakelight Tubes has shipped. I will need several days to make the appropriate adjustments to the code, but after that they will be made available.

Expect pics by the end of the month.

Can you change the amount of light output? I'm thinking that I may want to put one above the console as a sort of ambient light, since it has such a wide angle of diffusion. Maybe drilling a hole in the sunglass holder (don't use it anyway, not oakley friendly) and having it shine through the hole to give the cabin a nice glow at night. It would have to be a very dim glow though.

I see you're in coral springs. I go to University of Miami, so would be willing to do a little drive to pick one up to test out this little project.

A buddy of mine and I have been discussing this very issue. If you want to dim the LEDs, you can place various materials in front of them to tone down the brightness. I suggest a very thin piece of paper, or maybe a piece of window tinting. I haven't tried anything myself yet, but I'll be sure to do so in the coming weeks and post the results.

Since no Z owner has purchased a Mini yet, there are no pics to put up. I only have pics on an S.

To be honest, I'm not really sure why a pic of them on a Z would help anyone decide. They're lights, you can put them just about anywhere with little to no wiring, not much else can be said that hasn't been already.

I may have missed it but can you give an equipment and price breakdown of whats needed for the mini's to work if used in the foot wells and also for the map lights. Thanks

Im interested for the trunk as well. Would it just be simply connecting it like any other bulb and how exactly does one make it so that it only stays on one color? How hard is this to do?

For an area as large as the trunk, I suggest two Minis, one on either side.

The Minis only have two connections, power and ground. If you intend to use them as maplight replacements, request the Socket Module (@ $5/pair) for easy plug-and-play action.

I only provide socket modules for replacing festoon lamps (the bulbs that look like glass fuses). Any other socket will require you to attach directly to the socket's power and ground wires.

Upon power-up, the Mini will fade up from black to a bright white, remain white for 8-10 seconds, and then begin a slow and smooth fade from one color of the rainbow to the next. The entire process takes about 90 seconds, with the pattern temporarily stopping at each major color (red, yellow, green, etc.) for 4 seconds (since most people want the "solid" colors rather than shades in between). Using the provided jumper, you short two contacts when the desired color shows up. The LEDs will blink to let you know the color has been stored in memory, and that color will be displayed the next time power is applied. Use the jumper again to restart the color cycling.
