We are looking to move the servers soon and do a massive upgrade, right now turning that feature on combined with the front recent threads causes the DB to do a lookup of who's browsing each of the recent thread x # of users that hit the front page.

In essence it spins out the DB server on a dual processor box with 4G memory.

Hence the reason for the outage last night.

Yah,

It's just a really expensive query, and when you have 1600+ users online like I saw earlier today it's a bit rough the DB just pretty much falls out of the rack.

Granted most of what you're saying I have no idea what you're talking about.......but this feature is on pretty much every other site and most larger than this one.

^^^Not a very technical explanation from me.....lol

Basically with the amount of people that access the site it puts more strain on the servers, requiring them to access the Database more often. I turned it on a few days ago and yesterday it added to the impact of the servers. I guess the constant growth of the site will do that.

Anyway, we're still trying to fix a few issues and optimize the back end. Possibly if we can find a suitable way that it doesn't impact performance to much we'll turn it back on.

The next few weeks we are going to be going through some changes, for various reasons to improve speed, functionality, etc..
This means another server, moving the current ones and finishing the software upgrade. The moving part is going to suck..

Anyway hope this explains it better.

Just curious...
What DB software are you using?

I work at a software company and we use Informix (and let me tell you how much THAT sucks...) but we are trying to convince them to support others like mysql, (MS) SQL Server, PostSQL etc...

Turning the Users Viewing This Thread option is very server intensive and generally not worth it, especially with as much activity as occurs now.

The site will work better with quad (or quad x2) processors, or split up into two boxes, one as a backend for mySQL.

Yeah, kinda found that out
Were actually working on something like that but need to move the colospace, reconfigure the machines etc.. Its worked well up until now but definitely upgrade time again.

Since Kyle sold the site to IB and we "should" now have "capable" servers........can we go back to this option........???

Thanks.

Edit.....this was a pretty cool option for what it's worth.....
