Default Mandatory search before posting for new member?

Is there anyway to ensure that someone searches before posting? I know this sounds simple, but is there a way to not allow someone to post unless they have searched prior to posting? Like maybe making a box pop-up that says "You must search prior to posting for another X amount of times to fulfill the requirement of Y amount of posts before no restriction posting rights". Then once they search, they can post and no worries.

I don't know if this has ever been suggested before or what, but it would make for a better forum.

Then there would be no way to discern between people who are posting to ask common questions and people who are posting up with results, information, unique questions, etc... Imagine if every time you wanted to post a thread, for anything, you were forced to search, even if you weren't asking a question.

I understand what you're saying here. However, my description was meant to explain that this feature would only last for so long or after so many times of having to search prior to posting.

Also, if they are posting information, results, etc., then they should be screened prior to public view by a Newb specific Moderator...possibly.

^That's what I'm talking about, that would be awesome! That would be a beautiful thing because there's already enough BS (non-productive, non-Z) threads around for all of us and I think it's ridiculous to join this forum just for that type of activity.

Any actions taken to try and limit the morons from posting the same things over and over would ultimately dissuade people who you want to hear from with quality posts. Makes too many hoops to jump through and either you task moderators with insane amounts of work, or you drive away people to other forums because it becomes too cumbersome.

If I had to search every time I wanted to post, I wouldn't post here anymore.

No it wouldn't. People just ignoring stupid posts and not complaining would make for a better forum.

I actually submitted my idea to the mods.

Only allow people with "X" amount of posts to start threads (say 20) unless you're a premier member.

Never got an answer though.

If you don't like stupid threads/posts, stay out of "Off-Topic"...

Having to search before every post would be too troublesome and would eventually get some of the good members to stop posting.

Imo, this is just another one of "those threads"...

I'd rather see them working on the search feature itself rather than your idea.

I search for "front bumper removal"
And it leads me to the GoW thread, and other threads that have nothing to do with my search topic.

or mods closing them immediately might dissuade those from posting them in the first place. but then you would get a ton of "why was my post closed" threads making it more of a headache.

there is nothing wrong with the search, for those that know how to use it. problem lies with too many multiple threads covering the same topic being open, flooding the search and making it a pain to weed through them. maybe combine a lot of the multiple threads asking the same question over and over, or delete them completely.

Maybe someone who is good at using search could write up a sticky on how to get the best results.

too easy

click search and then click on the advanced search feature. type in the keywords you are looking for and hit the portion that says thread titles. then go over to the forum list that shows each subsection. find the one that covers the particular topic you are looking for. once you find that section hit the search now. it basically searches only those threads you requested in that particular subforum, clearing out some of the clutter. try it

go to the advanced search, click it
type the keyword INVIDIA and select search titles only
go over to the subforum list and select INTAKE AND EXHAUST
now click the SEARCH NOW button

you will find 89 threads covering INVIDIA exhausts, from "which one is better" to "how do you install it". you can also see how many times a similar question is asked over and over again because everyone claims the search doesn't work. to me it works fine. want some real fun, do the same thing with VORTECH as the keywords and select the forced induction section. 997 threads on that topic alone, owuld make for a lot of reading an studying

I think that when noobs go to hit the "New Thread" it should just redirect them to the seach function until they have at least 75-100 posts or been a member for 2 months

While I understand the frustration answering the same question over and over, the reality of most of the questions is that a search results in too many threads to go through.

Almost every question has been answered at some point so why post? It's just the nature of a forum.

Change the "Search Type" option from Natural Language to BOOLEAN and you'll get much better results. Maybe the admins should make this the default search type. Natural Language is pretty much useless.

Try it, it works.

Admins???
