Default Suggestion to speed things up

I come from 7thgencivic.com. It is the same board as this, made by the same people. His site flies!!!! he uses 2 servers one for the DB and one for the site.

You should really contact him and figure out why his site works and this one doesn't. His screen Name is Derik. Tell him Vincenzobar sent you. I use the same screen name for everything. I hope this problem is solved soon. i would hate to leave this place due to the simple inconvenience of speed. I feel like i am on a 28K when i come to this site and i have 756K DSL!

Thanks,
New to the World of Z

Default The speed of this site?

Anyone think this site would be faster, if a lot of the "flashy" stuff was removed? I have been a user on Preludeonline.com for a couple years... and while their regulations are a little tight... we still have a LOT of fun, and the site is a LOT faster.

They do stuff like, limiting the size of sig files (no one has animated gifs and 10 pictures in their sig), no user avatars, no flashy-scrolly text on the top of each page, etc...

Just a thought... since out of all the Z boards I have found, this site seems to have the best group of ppl, and the most information... its just painfully slow at times! :-)

Yeah, I know I'm a n00b... feel free to ignore this...

i have a post about this too. I came from 7thgencivic which is the same board and about 100 times faster. Its becuase they have the DB on one server and the Board on another for starters.

Any way there are other ways around the speed. the scrolling text is a script and eats next to nothing in speed. And the animated gifs for avarters do hurt but no biggy. Its mainly the bogging of the line and preload that are hurting this site. It seems as though there isn't enough bandwidth?!?!!?

we shall see

Agree with above, even with cable this is a slow site and becoming more so. Tho' the people are nice and the site informative I have been looking for more usable sites. Hope this is a server problem that can be fixed with upgrade, will be glad to provide financial contribution if this will help.

Concur about the server being integral with the speed issues... I like user avatars.

I would have moved over to www.350ZFrenzy.com along time ago but the traffic there is next to nothing. Other than that it's a great site. They have roll-over preview making surfing even faster.

It is a nice site, a lot of 350ZMotoring refugees either came here or went there (or both)... but yes, there isn't enough traffic...

I would have loved the roll-over preview here since this site is slower and the amount of posts is VERY high, but then again, the roll-over feature might slow this site down even further....

A little info on how a site like this works. It consists of many sub files (lamen terms) which do not decrease a page or site noticably unless your on a 56K. The main page that we see (user interface) calls many or one include file that calls things like rollover previews, footers, global functions like session variables and login checks and so forth. What we see is not the cuase of a slow sight.

It is purely the Server and Bandwicth in which this site is allowed access to run on and thru. Mike may only have 100mg with burst of 1500 set for his bandwidth. so if 200 people are on the site clickiing and moving and updating the Database (DB) the site will lag or bog.

PHP 4, which this site is written in is an extremely complex and quick language. it is open source. It is a fast language. Faster then ASP.Net. But Very Very Complex. EX. login in ASP.Net 50 lines. login in PHP 500+ lines. but becuase it is in its most generic form of code and does not neet to be compiled and decompiled it moves quick.

So in order to sum up. we need a Dell Xenon with SCSI hard drives 6 and redundancy. with a dual processor as well. Also seperate servers probably not as powerful as the one i just mention to store the site on one and the DB on another. And of course A huge limitless Line. Remeber SQL is also the best DB on the market, yes better than oracle or sun, especially for a site like this.

BTW I can get you everything you need I do this for a living. But unfortunetly i cannot donate. Got to pay for the car!!!

Maybe it would be faster if people had to host their own pics & avatars off-site?

ex. in asp.net of a SQL statement and recordset that calls the avatar

Dim RSimage
RSimage=
SELECT UserID, Image FROM boardUser WHERE UserID = Image

in HTML we put <% =RSimage %>

At bottom out of HTML
<%
RSimage.close
%>

Now that calls from one table that would in theory contain all info on you. He most likely has to call 2 table which would use an INNERJOIN function. Note this is not PHP It is a little longer than this but my point is.

This is what it take to pull the Avatar. 7 bytes of info.
The rest is left to your modem speed to load it on the front end.

Avaters are not a huge problem!

Trust me people it is the server and the Bandwidth. Everytime i try to acess the DB for editing or submitting it takes me 5 minutes. These should be global files/functions as well.

I disagree (and have 25 years experience programming etc).

Yes the bandwidth and server may be an issue but the slowness experienced today had to do with something else. I think someone was working on the server or otherwise making changes to the environment.

Right now, there are as many people on as there were earlier and the site is MUCH MUCH faster. There are more posts as well.

Also, this forum software CAN BE optimized better to make fewer queries etc. I am NOT a PHP guy but this is my semi-informed opinion.

i was thinking the same about the tweaking of the server behind the scenes. if this is the case please let us know when there is work to be done on the server. so we know to stay away. And i keep getting glimpses of speed. 1 minute is fast the next it doesn't load jack.

Optimize is the key. This is my experience with this Software. and i am not a programmer. I higher programmers and this is what they tell me. I may be off a little but not by much at all.
