Rep system
Im sure this idea must have been thrown around before.
I like this forum but the one thing I dislike is the overwhelming number of "n00b" posts. One example: There seems to be about 6 threads a day in the wheels/tires section along the lines of: "What wheels would look good on my Z?" "What offset do I need?" etc...
I think a rep system would eventually cut down these types of threads.
ALSO, there is a huge number of replys to these threads that serve no purpose except to ridicule the OP. I think the rep system would allow for a different outlet for the ridiculer. He can neg rep someone instead of saying dumb crap in the thread.
Finally, it would allow for some competition in quality posts. The people who are knowledgeable in certain areas would be more compelled to share some knowledge when they are recognized for passing along useful information. This, in time, would also indicate to other users which posters are probably passing along useful information (because they have a high rep).
I come from another board that used to use the rep system, it worked well for many years. I think it is a useful tool for establishing a forum. It can seem "brutal" to some, but I think we have that reputation anyway...so why not use it to this community's advantage?

Agreed. We(staff) already have enough to worry about, without adding something else. I can see it now. Members leaving negative rep points out of spite, then having my inbox full of complaints that so-and-so left them negative rep points. Thank you for the suggestion though...

Ive seen it work well on another car forum. They only removed it after probably 6 or 7 years because after that long, some of the members had an overwhelming number of rep points. These member would gang up on someone with lower rep and crush them with no hope of ever getting positive rep points. It was too harsh, so the mods removed the rep system. It took YEARS for the issue to arise because it took that long for the rep to climb to such unequal levels.
Oh, and just set a rule "NO PMS about rep" really the system seems to manage itself. People will spite other people, but those spiteful people won't ever accumulate enough rep to do any serious damage anyway.
Anyway, thanks for considering it.
