Server Improvements: Noticeable?
Dual proc
1G memory
It's go IDE drives though, I've got some more probing to do as well but right now I'm trying to get the db up to date before I worry about the OS at this point.

I didn't notice much of a difference, but that's probably because I'm now using Mozilla. I was on IE and switched to Mozilla and this site became a lot quicker (before you guys changed anything). Also, isn't 50,000 images about 30gb? Is 30gb a lot for a server to handle???
Nah,
We can address it, there are sites with a 1000+ users on vb. We just have to be aware of our size and make good decisions on how to design the site to scale..

On the lower end of things, we need to get to ATA/133/7200/raid controller.
Next step up is SATA/150/10,000RPM/raid, the only thing I don't like bout this is the only SATA drives at 10K are western digital. I dislike WD due to all the failures i have encountered, theoretically they are a good drive company.
I would actually go with SATA/150/7200RPM from Seagate for reliability, but the extra 3krpm would make a difference/be tempting.
better options would be SCSI-II/160/10K-RPM/RAID
and of course best would be SCSI-III/320/15K-RPM/RAID.
Talk to you guys later,
joe
Server speed is a million times better. I dont have to walk away and get a cup of coffee anymore between page loads.
I knew something had to give before anything would be done. I'm very thankful you guys are upgrading the server.

I'm sure this is followed up by a sensible solution that is stable, open source, free, and doesn't requirem me to take a mortgage on my house to finance..
Otherwise you'll be considered a troll
