Thats exactly the reason why Yahoo chose PHP to replace their proprietary yScript that they've been using for years now, right?

I suppose the ease of use in PHP does attract a lot of novice developers, but if you know what you're doing, there should be no question that PHP is just as powerful as any other web development language.

Yahoo's use of PHP is often brought up in defense of the language as an "industrial strength" tool. It has about as much validity as saying that the Linux kernel should be written in bash scripts because they successfuly replaced the csh/sh scripts of yore.

PHP is a suitable scripting language; Python is better, in my opinion. Ease of use, rapidity, and succinctness are important features of a scripting language.

The requirements for a scripting language are much different than those for an architecture language. Solid typing, a good object model, scalable and efficient run times, and excellently written foundation of API and infrastructure software are all necessary. PHP has...none of those. Go ahead and ask Yahoo - they certainly aren't using PHP for their heavy lifting.
