Unhappy leakdown test results

If you remember from my oil burn thread, I burn at least 1qt/600 miles on mobil 1. I'm testing with castrol gtx 10w40 for 1000 miles now.

A couple weeks ago, I did a compression test, and the left side of the engine was in the 185 range and the right side was in the 195psi range.

AlanL and I did a leakdown test today and got 32, 34 and 32% leak rate on the left side and 24, 22, and 22% on the right side.

The air was leaking out the valve cover, through the oil filler and pcv tube, which diagnoses as pistons/rings, according to the directions with the leakdown kit.

I think I'm just going to live with it for a while though, as money is currently an issue.

Sounds like your at least the 3rd person on this board with FI to have this problem and with the same oil. Sorry to hear about this news dude.

those are very high leakdown #'s and i cant imagine that all 6 cylinders would be toast. Are you sure you are using the tester correct? I am not saying that your engine is OK cause if you consume that much oil something is obviously wrong... but I would be surprised if its really that bad?

why would it be the oil? i have been running mobil 1 in my toyota truck for about 140,000 miles and it doesn't use any oil in between changes. oh i forgot, 100,000 of those miles are supercharged. my evo 8 says right on the oil fill cap mobil 1 only.

since you have the stillen s/c kit, do you think they will help with any of the damages? i guess we'll get to see just how well the stillen insurance/warranty really is? good luck with everything.

I bought the stillen 2nd hand, and its stage 3, so no warranty on 2 counts. I'm on my own here.

As for Mobil 1, its just speculation. While not everyone who uses Mobil1 has problems, just about everyone who has an oil consumption problem has been using mobil1.

I'm sure we did the test right. I also dyno'd only 285 at Z1, but everyone elses dynos were down about 15hp from where we normally dyno, but it should have been 340, or at least 310 on the Z1 dyno.

Just a thought. Most people getting ready to/or already boosting are switching to a sythetic oil. It just happens to be that since most do switch, the problems in oil consumption reflect that they use Mobil1 or other synthetics

actually, most people with the oil burn issue aren't boosting. Its just that since I am, I have no warranty to fall back on.

Sorry to hear about this. The oil consumption is certainly a sign of engine/ring wear. Hope your budget lets you get it fixed soon. Otherwise, I would stay out of the boost.

And oh.....Mobil 1 synthetic oil has nothing to do with people burning oil.

Mike if Nissan does not know about the supercharger take it off. If the dealer you use knows about it, take it to another one with the S/C off the car. PM me if you need assistance

If it is leaking from the valve cover and oil filler, that would suggest to me that it is the valve seals. If it is coming out of the PCV tube that would mean the rings. Since you have both, I kinda suspect that you may not have done the test correctly. Just my 2¢.

the instructions said all 3 of those places indicated rings/pistons.

Mike, I'll talk to you saturday. Can't really hide the fact I had a supercharger, as it taps directly into the engine wiring at both cam sensors and the crank sensor, plus I have the wideband O2 bung, and I let M3powerrr "borrow" some bolts he lost when he took the kit off his car, and he never replaced them as promised.

Brother I feel you pain as I once voided all of my warrenties on a mustang that I once owned.......If you really want to see if it is valve seal leak or piston ring leak just take the cams out...Then perform your leak down test....Since you have to remove these items to fix either problem it is easier to replace valve springs than piston rings anyday....One question how many miles are on the engine?

26000, about 7000 with supercharger, but I was burning oil before the install (not as much, but burning, nonetheless)

You know it sounds as if you motor had a problem before you intorduced boost into the picture.....Man I hate it when I here that you have only had 7K worth of fun with your motor.....Well I would baby it until you get the funds and time to fix it right.....How much were you burning before the boost hit the motor....I would say that if you were burning oil before the boost that it would not be valve seals but it would be piston rings....Just so hard to figure out without taking it appart and seeing what is going on.....Brother just think of this as how bad things could be...Today I was in the garage and playing with my 1991 mustang putting the finishing touches on her to go out to a cruz night....I started her up let her warm up and I just got this feeling as I should check the oil.....Looked like a milk shake!!!!!!!F**KF**KF**K!!!! Drain the oil to get a flood of water out of the pan......F**K....Stupid intake gasket didn't seal correctly....So I feel you pain....

I never measured usage before the supercharger, just noticed what went into the drain pan was less than what went into the engine. I would guess 1.5 to 2 qts every 3750 miles.
