New Member Of Blown Engine Club
I am really sorry to hear of your loss man..
Extra sorry, since its stories like this one, that are beginning to convince me, that maybe a TT set-up is not a good idea ,for a daily driver. (I sold my Q45 and my S13 for the Z)
I can afford a Greddy TT Install, parts and labor, but probably not an extra 5k for engine build up, in addition to the TT and the TT install.
If a blown motor is that common that is, I mean if they just blew once ever couple years on stock internals then it wouldnt matter just get a new engine + reinstall kit end of story but if its after a few months...
This might mean I stay N/A since the SC kits push a lot of PSI too, or its different there (Vortech at 8lbs?)
But NA mods are a lot of money for little gain..
Fred..

you are right...you have to spend a lot of coin to hang with the big boys...even though i just blew my motor, like i said the past few months, spanking every other car on the road was actually prolly worth it!
i know i'm lame
i know i'm lame
How about this link: Is this a <complete> engine ready to drop, everything included, so installler doesnt have to transfer injectors, knock sensors etc ?

for $5800 bucks...i will pay the labor to transfer injectorsa and knock sensor...and we are rebuilding the engine..all the stock pistons and rods are going to become paperweights!
thanks though

Sorry to hear about your motor! At least you are doing the build anyway. You are definitely not alone here. There is a reason I do not go on any other forums. The FI guys here are the nicest and some of the most knowledgable around! Good luck with you new block.
wow, im sorry to hear about this guys!!! hmmm, do you think it would be safe? hehe or safer if i go with a S/C kit and keep it at stock boost? i cant really afford blowing a motor so if the Z is not reliable on stock internals at stock boost, i think i will keep my car at the breathing mods only.

get the forged internals...i planned on this from the beginning, but i should have done it all at once..now like everyone's favorite new york straightedge hardcore band, The Path of Resistance" always said... I will "tear it down, build it back up stronger!"
If i could do it over, i'd definately still go twin turbo...but i'd do the forged internals at the same time..now it will cost me at least another $700 to buy a used block (i havent had it checked yet but i assume my block is toast

why does it seem that greddy TT kits are blowing alot of motors. i know that gurgenpb01's motor blew with a PE kit. i may be wrong but, that's how it seems to me.
it's easy to say, "don't let it stress you" but, only those with or had blown motors really know how you feel. so i'll say good luck with your new install and hope all goes well.

The reason more Greddy cars are blowing up is becuase there are far more Greddy instllations than any other brand. To my knowledge, only 3-5 people on this board have the PE kit, and at least 30-40 have the Greddy kit. There are probably more of both kits that dont post on the boards. And only a handful of people have the APS kit installed.
So statically, we'll see more blow ups with the Greddy kit. Not to mention the basic kit is missing a few things...like a fuel system upgrade and timing retard.

for the record...my set-up had the timing retard...i thinkmy driving out to cali (my car running like crap at sea level), then driving back out here...i'm sure that didnt help the situation...that was 2 1/2 weeks ago..maybe i started the damage there...and it escalated until something snapped...or maybe not..who knows?
550reliable rwhp is in my near future...that's one thing i do know!

what was your fuel setup like? how much timing did you pull? what was your target a/f when it was tuned? what injectors?
did you have a fuel return line setup?
i'm trying to figure out what people had in their setup before they blew...

Very sorry for ur loss. I know exactly how u r feeling. I bent a rod while road tuning and decided to just get a new engine and put the kit back on and leave it at the stock boost. So far no problems and its been almost 3 months. Im also mixing 100 0ctane and 91 octane just to be on the safe side. Good luck. Keep us posted. If i had the money i would definately go to forged internals way. But got to take in cosideration the smog checks here in california and the chance that it might not pass due to lower compression.

fuel setup was nothing extensive...just a walbro 255, nothing else, running 91 octane here in albuquerque
a/f was very good throughout: 11.6:1 for the most part- 11.4:1
injectors: the 440's that came with the greddy kit
no return line....
after the build: 550 injectors, return line, i'll keep you guys updated as these things progress, i'll be ordered my clutch/flywheel, injectors, and new plugs today....i'm gonna be piecing together my ordering of parts so by the end of next week most things will be ordered, still gotta pull the engine to know what was damaged: that will of course inform me if i need a block
(i'm expecting it) and maybe any head damage (i'm hoping not)

Plus the APS kit has not been out as long. The longer a kit has been on a car, the greater chance of engine failure. Of course at some point, the risk level drops off percentage wise.

Bought new rolling short block, Carilo rods and Arias pistons(thanks gq_626)
I would have built up the engine at the time of the GReddy install had I known about the weak internals...install date Feb. '04. Blow up date Nov. 23 '04...3600 miles at stock boost...hardly any WOT runs prior to tuning...
Sorry to read about your loss DCalb...good luck with the rebuild.
Sorry to hear that Todd, guess it comes with the territory.

plus most people are raising the boost from what Greddy sets the kits up at.
