Default ARP Mains, use the washers?

If you use the washers on the ARP mains you loose a little bite with the threads, if you dont use the washers you get a good bite into the AL block just like the OE bolts. You guys that are Pro's or have DIY with the ARP mains is this a concern? Either way how much of the stud should stick up through the bolt after you torque them? Or should they be about dead even? And does 60ftlbs sound right for the torque spec with ARP moly lube?

I think the washers help to distribute more of the downward torque into the flat surface of the head and give the head a better and broader down force on to the block....helps a little with better gasket seal. On mine the bolts stick up just slightly past the nut....perfect.

i think he is talking about that the studs are not long enough to use the washers... which could be the case if you have older version of the main studs that was being sold?

I do have an older main stud set set from SGP, is it OK to not use the washers? The OE main fasteners do not have the washers.

On the heads studs the washers are ok and the lenght is perfect.

And this is good info, the thread sizes for the mains and head studs are...
mains M10x1.5
head M11x1.25
You will need to order taps in these sizes to clean the threads prior to assembly. I ordered mine from www.mscdirect.com

Charles,

Thanks for taking the time to talk to me about this. I took your advice and used a counterbore with a giude on a drill press and milled a recess for the washer to sit in the girdle. It took me 5 min to do, clean up took longer. Chased all the holes, used the ARP lube and they all torqued down fine. Now I need to have the pistons notched for squirter clearance

Which brand of pistons are you using? IF they are Arias pistons....they have been correctly notiched since mid Dec...unless you bought a set from the original GB...and the owner of those pistons never sent them back to Arias to be fixed.

I know CP Pisons also had the oil squiter clearance issue as well. Glad you are aware of it.

But let me know kind of pistons you are using...I am curious.

VQ30 head on the FWD VQ35 block

Had to notch the VQ30 girdle to clear the rod bolts due to the longer stroke
