is that even possible? aren't they weighted and balanced just right for their intended application...i'm guessing any sort of coating to the turbine may throw off the calibration...keeping in mind these things spin soooo insanely fast, a microgram of weight may change their performance/longevity...etc

Yes , I have an APS TT setup and had the 2 manis, impeller housings and DPs coated in 2700degree black ceramic coating (both inside and out). The shop I used in NorCal even cleaned up the rough casting inside the Garret exhaust housings NC. If you run your finger inside the port you'll see that the base housing has a few rough edges.
