Vortech Install problem...
I copied this from the G35driver site my buddy wrote this up and wanted to post it here to see if anyone has any ideas.....
*******This is what went on during the install*********
Whats up fellas. Well i am the guy that was helping my best friend (cky2k) install the supercharger on his car. As he said, we ran into a couple of small problems. The stupid adapter that goes into the hole where the oil pressure sending unit was lost. We went throught the BIGGEST mission trying to find a die to re-thread the TEE to fit. FINALLY, we were able to get everything working fine. The install was pretty straight forward. G352nv helped us with useful info over the phone. Thanks BTW. After the install, we cranked her up, and BAM...started right up no problems...after about 3-5 seconds of idling, she would just bog down and shut off. First thought was..."ok, we there's still air pockets in the fuel system and we have to give the fuel a chance to run through all the fuel lines". No luck...We then started brainstorming on what the hell could be wrong. It sounds like its a fuel related issue because the car cranks up but as soon as you tap the throttle, it shuts right off. We tried re-routing the vaccum line directly to the manifold pressure source on the plenum (sp?)..NOTHING. Checked all wiring to the fuel pump, everything was fine. Checked for blown fuses, nothing. Then we went ahead and completely bypassed the SS box and let the OEM ECU run the car. The car cranked right up and it ran for about 5 seconds then it did the same thing. We put the SS box back to the way it was and same thing...NOTHING. After about 1 hr of trial and error, we decided to call G352nv. He suggested that the fuel lines might have been criss crossed, we went ahead and checked everything and it turns out that they WERE WRONG. A co-worker of cky, went ahead and put the lines the right way then DOUBLE and TRIPLE checked to make sure they were set up correctly. cranked her up and what do you know...car started fine and STAYED on and idled PERFECT....for 15 seconds. We thought everything was fine because it stayed on longer than the usual 5 seconds but of course....it bogged down and shut off. By then, all 3 of us were pretty stumped as to what could have happened. You could hear the OEM fuel pump energizing when the key is turned to the ON position, so it seems to be fine. By that time, it was about 9:30PM we were EXHAUSTED so we decided to call it a night. G352nv suggested that we should connect the fuel lines back to stock and see if she fires up. We didnt get a chance to try that last night because we were too damn tired already and it started raining on us. CKY decided to have the car towed today to a local shop that has worked on vortech superchargers and done several installs on g35's/350Z's and nissans in general. I just got off the phone with him and he said that they were trying to figure out what the problem might be but no luck YET. The ONE thing they DID find, is that when they disconnected the MAF, the car starts and idles fine WITHOUT shutting off AT ALL. so it might be something related to that. I'm sure CKY will come on here and give more details as to what went on at the shop. They said that they wont have time to check the car out FULLY until tomorrow (MAYBE) since as you guys might know, there is a hurricane headed our way that should be hitting us tomorrow morning. Depending on how severe the hurricane is, the guys might go into the shop in the morning and start working on the car.
Thank you guys for all your support. And thanks a million to G352NV for all the tips and help as we went along on the install. Sorry for nagging you so much. Cant forget TurboMaxima either, we read his how-to a couple of times to make sure we were on the right track.
We'll keep everyone updated on the issue.

I'm just thinking and typing random thoughts to try and help Will out. Maybe it will help, maybe not...
Could there be an air leak before the MAF?
Maybe a damaged MAF?
How can the car run w/o air going by the MAF?

they wont beable to get to my car to either later today ... and if its not bad here in miami due to the storm the owner will come in earlier to take a look at the car and make sure everything is ok....
ill keep you guys updated ... but the more responses i get i can give to the guy and let him know before he starts looking for the fault

What shop did you take your car to? I'm located in Miami and just recently finished my vortech install a couple weeks ago. I had hooked up the fuel lines incorrectly also, but luckily I noticed when I checked he install BEFORE I tried to start it up. I was thinking about what could have happened if I had started it before I fixed the lines, and I think that the FMU could have been damaged. I suggest they check the FMU.
Let me know if I can help.

This is what i'm thinking....i've been busting my head all day trying to figure out what could be wrong with the car....since the car seems to run fine without the MAF connected, I'm thinking that maybe its the base fuel map that was pre-loaded into the SS box. Seeing how the fuel map on there is for an '03 and the kit is installed on an '04, there might be a small variance in MAF readings/signal/voltage between '03s and '04s. I really dont know much about G35's seeing how i drive an SRT4 so maybe someone with a little more knowledge on the subject can chime in here. I think that maybe our best bet is to load an '04 base map into the SS box using the R4 software. I'll first get a reading from the SS box and compare the fuel map to a fuel map from an '04 to see what settings vary between the two years. Thinking about how a piggyback works, my two options would be to load a base fuel map from an '04, or if i cant get my hands on one. I'll have to make my own and just adjust ALL the values to 10% accross the board for fuel, and 0% for ignition timing. Any input is greatly appreciated.

to answer some of your questions...
G352NV: No, the shop hasn't hooked up the lines back to OEM yet. They'll probably do that tomorrow since they didnt have time to really mess with the car today.
ss350: I dont see how the FMU could have been damaged if the lines were wrong. They were just simply doing reverse functions.
neffster: we checked all couplers and clamps to make sure everything was tight. Maybe we should check to make sure that the MAF made a good seal onto the pipe....thanks.
Damaged MAF is also an option. But i really dont see how that happened. The MAF was removed and installed on the new pipe and it just sat there.
booger: Yes, we re-set the ECU when we disconnected the ss box. we didnt adjust the BOV at all. we left it just the way we recieved it from G352NV. Even if the BOV was leaking, it still seems to be a fuel related issue because the car shuts off RIGHT AWAY when you blip the throttle.
thanks for the input guys...keep it comin

Open the drivers door. Look for a 4 digit build date: Is it AFTER 10/03? If so then Will has the ULEV-2 version of the ECU. This will be drastically different from the 2003 version.
You can buy the SW from www.splitsecond.com or if you're lucky a few people here can e-mail it to you.

Send me your email and I'll get you the SW . But I dont think the base map would be any thing different from the 03 to the 04 . All the values on the vacuum side of the map are the same [ 10 ] fuel [0] timing . That lets the cars ECU handle the timing and fuel needs and its not until you get into boost that you start to change values . A [10 ] in the fuel map , means NO change to what the cars ECU is doing . And [0] is no change in the timing map .
thanks i will get more info tomorrow and let the shop know exaclty what you guys have mentioned ....

Booger, yes, 10 on the fuel and 0 on timing will just let the ECU control the car...i am aware. Would you happen to know if the base map that comes pre loaded into the SS box is like that? or is there a mild "tune" to it? It seems to me as if the MAF signal is being altered and the car is getting inaccurate readings so its not supplying the correct amount of fuel to keep the car at idle. thanks
the mass is bad swap it with someone elses to check either that or there is a massive vacume leak When you disconect the mass the ecu see's that its tgone and operates on volumetric efficiency wearas the computer tells itself that at xxx rpm xxx cubic grams of air are entering the motor and it figures out fuel trim that way also check and make sure the mass is flowing in the right dirrection and by all means do not rev her with the mass disconected she will ping her brains out becasue the engine doenst know that there is more air. you can e-mail me at psychoticminds1@aol.com maybe i can try to help( I do this for a living lol damn cars)

Yes there is a base map . But on the Vacuum side of the base map..it is like I stated [10] fuel [0] timing . If the base Vortech map is in the SS box .You should be able boost safely to 8psi right off the bat . But I would check it to make sure . Sounds like you guys are installing a used kit and I would want to check the maps to make sure . You stated that you bypassed the SS box altogether and still had the problem , so dont think that will be your problem
well yes, the kit was bought used. but to my knowledge, the ss box was NEVER tuned on the previous owner's car. So that means that it should still be the way it came. Will got the kit from G352NV, maybe he can chime in and re-assure.

psychoticminds1 suggested to me that maybe the MAF is facing the wrong direction.... the pipe that the MAF is mounted on was custom made and the hole was manually cut out for the MAF to fit in. this will be the first thing we check tomorrow (if the shop opens). I really hope this hurricane isnt bad

The box is new and has a Vortech map on it.
