Default Coolant temp comparisons...3" exhaust + koyo radiator

i know one of the hot topics have been coolant temps and how hot these motors get (I have hardly done any 5ht gear pulls ever because i have been paranoid of overheating the motor and damaging something)

in the past, it was not abnormal to see coolant temps in my car as high as 212 degrees after some spiriting driving...

i did a comparison..this was all datalogged in the EU

lately, my mods have been planned in such a way as to address coolant temps..and i'm pleased to report... WE GOT IT COVERED!

old setup:
borla true dual exhaust 2 1/3 inch exhaust
stock radiator
water water + 50/50 coolant/distilled water

so looking at some datalogging that i did back in the day, coolant temps would stay high..all of the time..185-190 was normal...even in 70 degree weather..at night!!!

the runs that i am comparing were done in 4th gear, from 3000 rpm to 6200rpm...these runs were done after allowing coolant temps to stabalize and cool down from any previous activity
in the first example..old setup...
night time pull, 70 degrees at the hottest outside...
coolant temps started at 190degrees...and 15 seconds following the run, the coolant temps were close to 200 degrees (keep in mind, previous pulls in 5th gear yielded a coolant temp of at least 5 degrees higher)

temp slowly cools down to 195, hangs out there for 1/2 a minute or so, and gradually works its way back to 190...

now the current research:
with current setup:
custom 3" true dual exhaust with 3" tanabe mufflers
koyo radiator
1 bottle water wetter, 70% distilled water/30% coolant

coolant temp prior to run...180 degrees..after a few pulls, gets up to 187 degrees...
(mind you, this is during the day, 75 or so degrees out, cruising on the freeway)
so, the pull starts at 187 degrees...4th gear pull...coolant temp 15 seconds later gets up to 190 degrees!!! max!!!! then cools down to 188 degrees about 25 seconds later!!!

i will do some pulls in 5th gear and publish the results..but at cruise, i run 175-180 degrees all day long, whereas before, at cruise, i would see 195 constantly!!!

so, guys, get out there and get your 3" exhausts and upgraded radiators!!!

*i'll keep you all posted on how the temps look on the road course as well

Thanks again Sharif at www.forgedinternals.com !!!

Thanks for sharing the results..that's awesome. I am glad the radiator is working well for you. Free flowing exhuast, makes a huge different in keeping coolant temps down, via backpressure (heat) reduction, and the upgraded radiator adds to that as well.

That great news! And to think that Sharif and Eric discovered what was causing the overheating on my car. I am honored to know that the work on my car will contribute to others not fuking something up. I am really glad I didn't *** something up...lol.

I haven't done any logging yet, but I can tell you that I have not stopped beating the the crap out of my car since I got it back with the new exhaust and radiator, and I have yet to see the temp needle move even 1 tick in the hot direction. I'll also point out that up until 2 weeks ago the outside temps was in the 90's. Thanks Sharif! This radiator is the chit!

Dammit Jorge...you beat me to it! Todd left the door wide open on that one. I can't believe Todd was able to sleep through all that NOISE! Open exhuast and 550whp...and he was still sleeping like a baby in the back room.

put the front undertray back on and then take the measurements... it'll be about 20degrees warmer... thats what happened to me..
i just dont like driving w/o it since i want to protect my belts from random crap i roll over..

I thought the undertray helped to keep temps down. If not, mine is coming off.

Todd would you mind doing another set of runs with the undertray to tell us what it does? I would do it, but I am not datalogging coolant temps.

the front undertray is suppose to
1) protect the underside of the engine from foreign objects
2) help try to smooth the airflow under the nose to help give the Z our original Zero lift capabilities.
3) in some cases, bring air to the front brakes.

Did any of you ever consider the ARC undertray? It has small openings to let air get through and help cool the engine.

Cheston, doesn't it also help the flow of air in the engine bay?

irrelevant...the comparisons i made were all done without the tray...the point is...while keeping the variables constant, there was a HUGE drop in temps

yea... its supposed to force the air thru the radiator and into the engine bay... but since our engine bay is so crammed. the air doesnt circulate as well as it should.. without the undertray. air just goes all over the place.

Did you guys have to trim your radiator hoses? Does anyone sell any that will fit perfectly with the Koyo replacement? I had mine installed and the guy told me that he needed to cut some of the hoses to make them shorter to fit. I looked at it with the stock hose height and it looks squished...

I also had a noob question. Is the A/C unit directly in front of the radiator cause I couldnt see the radiator looking at it straight on. Let me know guys.
