Default What exactly does "tuning" including for a turbo?

I've been going back and forth between getting a supercharger and a turbo and the only offset is the fact that the turbo (turbonetics ST) will need tuning. What exactly is done to tune? is it computer ECU tuning? Installing the kit at home without endangering the enging is my main goal. Has anyone used a turbonetics out of the box? Forced induction is such a hard choice!

well as far as i am concerned you can not tune the turbonetics kit unless you go with a piggyback system (i.e. greddy e-manage). I am currently running on an out of the box tune (you send your ecu to turbonetics and they tune it for you) so really you cannot mess with the parameters of the tune your self. also i did the install in my garage in about 18hrs with 4 jackstands and lots tools and beer.

Is the turbonetics tune part of the package deal when you purchase the kit? I'm guessing that with the piggyback system, you will need to know exactly what parameters to tweak the car to. Also, can the ECU reflash be tuned to match aftermarket parts as well?

yes the reflash is included with the kit they even give a pre-paid label to send it to them overnight. well if you go the piggyback system route you will get more power but will need to be dyno tuned so incase spend more money on the dyno tunning and also on buying the piggyback unit. yes the ecu reflash can be made to work with other aftermarket parts but honestly the only one i could imagine you would need to reflash for is cams. (i have exhaust, intake plenum and never had to compensate for either)

I highly recommend doing a Greddy Emanage with the Turbonetics kit, even with the re flash they provide the car runs extremely rich you can we have been going up to 440cc injectors and a boost controller and seeing around 400hp while using the Greddy Emanage ultimate to tune.

How intensive is the programming of an eManage box? Theres more to it than just plugging in the unit, right?

yes there is more to than just plugging in, to get your money's worth you would need it to be dyno tuned.

well i would not say you would need all of that to see 400, with the setup i have now i am at 390rwhp and if i wanted to add a pulley im sure i would see 400, but yes the tune does run a bit rich but its safer than running lean.

The Turbonetics DOESN'T need tuning at all. It comes with a reflashed ECU. Plug & Play.

no its not that rich but rich enought that you have build up inside the tail pipes. actually most people are getting a reading of 10.5:1 at wot, i however am at 11.0:1 at wot. most people would say that 11.5:1 is ideal.

So then is the e-manage tuning only to achieve maximum power gains? I just don't want to take the risk of blowing my motor bc of an improper tune.

basically yes its achieve higher power levels, but also have to worry about improper tuning unless you got somebody like sharif with lots of experience then i wouldn't really worry about it.
