I have not cleaned my filter since I put the Vortech on about 6k miles ago and its about black and looks like ****! I figure its about time to do it. There is not enough room to just loosen the clamp holding it on and then pull it off the SC itself. Some questions regarding this issue:

1)Is it possible to remove the filter without removing the SC?

2) Also, I have heard that the G35 filter is different and that if used on a Z, it is able to be removed without removing the SC unit. Is this true? While at CP Racing a few months ago, I asked them about the filter and they thought I had the G35 filter on mine. I am not thinking this is the case because I can't get it off and because this filter has the hose running to it unlike the G filter.

3)What is the part number for the G filter and who has it?

My filter had the hose running to it . I undid the clamp and pushed the filter down . I took off the front , inner fender well . pulled out the filter that way . WHile your there , clear your oil squirter

 

Zach...The Vortech Filter for the G35 is different than the Z Filter. It's shorter, with same cone diameter. The part number is: 8H040-035 Air Filter, 3.5" Flange, G35, Offset, 3.7" You might want to order two (2). I say that because you will destroy the Z Filter. This also gives you the opportunity to have a clean filter available at all times.

Now the G35 Filter does not have the hole for the breather. So, I went to AutoZone and purchased a small breather filter and straight fitting to add to the end of the breather hose. It now sits where the end of the Vortech SC filter once extended to. Another plus, NO oil in the filter or inside the blower, ducting and BOV. I also took a Dremel and filed down some of the plastic that covers the radiator support. Now you can, with a little squeezing, install the filter from the top. I did this to "Barzten1"'s Z. His actually comes off and goes on easier than mine. Go figure?

 

what about setting up the vortech to have the filter be where the ATI or turbonetics kit filter is? It'd be colder air and you could reach it by taking the undertray off right?

 

Bill, where is the oil squirter and how do I clean it?

Ron, thanks for that info on the G35 filter. I would rather not start dremeling my car so I will try Bills method first for removal!!

SungNamZ did mine and I clean it every 6-8 weeks. Notice a power difference every time I clean it.

 

My filter did have the breather hose hooked to it , but I remember now that the shop put a hole in it to connect the hose . The oil squirter is on the end of the oil feed hose thats threaded into the blower

 

Zach asked if I had some pics of the G35 Filter installed. Did a little Dremel work on the plastic covering the radiator suppor and added the breather filter.

Does anyone who has the Z filter also have the G filter who could take a side-by-side pic of both filters? I am curious to see what the differences in size are. With the G filter, will it just pull out of the opening easily?

 

Don't have my old Z filter laying around, but did measure the G filter that is currently mounted. Overall length: 3 3/4" Cone length: 3" Again, depending on how much you dremel the plastic determines how easily it comes out.

If you look at the pics I posted mine gets crimped a little on 4-5 filter ribs. On Barzten1, which I did, you will fine none crimped.

 

Thanks again Ron. I measured mine and the length of the cone, from fornt to back of vehicle, is also 3". I bought me a Dremel today and did some dremeling and got down to the metal support underneath the plastic piece and I still havent gotten mine out. I guess I will try again later.

 

Well... I just tried again to get the filter off and did not have any luck again. Does anyone know of another type or brand of filter that has the same ID for the clamping flange? I am not going to deal with this BS every time I need to clean the dam filter. This is about a fuking stupid design by Vortech on this filter and location.

BTW, what is the ID of the clamping flange on the filter.

 

Did you try taking the filter out through the left wheel well? That works for the G. I'm not sure about the Z. Anyway, it lets you clean the oil inlet nozzle which you're supposed to do no less than every 3K (usually during your oil change).

 

I havent tried that, but I see some metal tubes running there so I dont forsee it going thru there. Also, with my bodykit, I cant get a jack underneath the car to lift it. My sideskirts are about 2-3" off the ground. It looks like about any method to use is about fuking stupid and more work than should be necessary when changing a dam air filter.

 

zach, i bought a smaller k&n filter that fits on there and is easier to change, ill look for the number, it was about $50. you can measure the ID of the filter and go the thier website, i think they have a huge chart with all the filters on it.

try this one RU-4410, that looks like it.

 

The metal tubes are probably your A/C lines. Perhaps you could drive part way up a ramp with the left front wheel and then get a floor jack under there. You've got to do this anyway if you have a Vortech. Not cleaning the oil nozzle is NOT an option. If this gets clogged with even a tiny piece of dirt or metal, the blower is toast and voids the blower warranty.

 

Oh, ****! I guess I will be paying someone to do this for me.
