It's a Lycoming turbine engine out of a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter.

About 700 shaft horespower, and about $750,000.

The REAL classic move was the guy that strapped a solid rocket booster on his full sized chevy and tried it out on a desert highway. The wreckage looked like a plane crash and the point of impact was 30 feet up on the side of a mountain. His speed couldn't be determined but it was moving fast enough to generate lift without wings.

Wow, how did he manage to get such an engine under the hood? Maybe I'm overestimating the size of the engine

+1^. That story has been bangin' around here in SW Arizona for as long as I can remember--w/ the desert between Tucson & Phoenix as the alleged venue. It never happened.

i have the darwin award book, and this story actually won the award in 1995 only to be found later to be an urban legend. that really sucks cause i was laughing my *** off when i first heard about it and could imagine someone actually doing it!!!
supposedly, he was in a 67 impala, ignited the jato rocket 3.9 miles from the crash, quickly reached about 300mph, stayed on the highway 2.6 miles, melted the brakes, blew the tires, then airborne the last 1.3 miles to impact a cliff side 125 feet up leaving a crater 3 feet deep. hahahhahhaaa. "official darwin story" yes it was supposed to be in arizona.

It's still nice to keep these old stories alive, just for their entertainment value. Twenty years from now they will be calling B.S. for internal combustion engines making 3 horsepower per cubic inch on gasoline!
