Default Lower EGT's????

hey guys well ive been thinking recently and well is there a way to efficiently bring down egts?

btw i have the turbonetics kit with fmic and well at full boost i constantly see 1400 degrees at cruise i am at about 1000 degrees.

just wondering what positive or negative effects may come out of lowering egt's.

i'm almost sure thats normal? Ive ridden in 3 or 4 turbo performance cars and all their egt's were from 800- 1000. however, they all had the sensor placed in different places. Its a good thing ur not seeing a large difference in egt from boost to cruise.

a more free flowing exhaust will lower egts, but since you have the TN, you have to decide, blown engine or higher egts.

ill be waiting.....

It depends on where your EGT is. If yous is right at the header its going to be that high...thats pretty standard..

My EGT sensor is on the pipe that is after the headers. I see temps up to 1200-1400 on a cruise. Vaccum is at about 2. Is that high? That seems high. Just got the kit on yesterday. TN that is of course.

If it is any further than 6" from the block you wasted your money on the gauge.

well i know that im less that six inches cause its actually placed on the "collecter" on the stock manifold, but what makes you say its a waste i know people that placed it on the cross-over pipe and have the same reading as i do.

I disagree; you can compensate for distance in calibration. Yes, I know that that is not always as accurate (but it is close enough that you know if you are getting into dangerous temps). Why would you do that if its not as accurate? In a turbo application, you ALWAYS want to put all sensors after the turbo. Small pieces of sensors (egt and a/f) have been know to break off and seriously f*ck up the turbine. I think that close to the turbo (about 2 inchs) on the downpipe is the ideal place for an EGT.

I'm not sure what that would mean for the TN setup where the turbo is so far from the headers... I would have a difficult time deciding what to do there. In that case the distance from the header is so far that is bordering on worthless.

You are taking EGT's to detect detonation in the first place.. so you will want a fast reading. Anything farther than 6" will react too slowly.

EGT's are not used to detect knock. They are used as a secondary safety measure, in addition to wideband AF ratios.

1400 degrees at WOT isnt too terribly high. We usually see between 1250-1350 degrees, but we are running cams, headwork, and 3 inch true dual exhuast. EGT's are going to vary by car, and will vary based on the location of the probe.

Ways to reduce EGT include a larger diameter exhuast, and more ignition timing towards redline (up to the point of knock). But honestly, I dont think 1400 is that bad, especially given your probe location.

The most obvious answer here to lowering EGT's is to run the AFR richer. But I don't understand why you would want to lower your EGT.

Install test pipes - EGT's will come down 100 F across the board.
