You can just take it to a local car mechanic and get them to drain the A/C. You can take it off your self and take it back to get it recharged.

Yeah, if you're not being "environmentally concious", you can just purge the system and have any local shop refill it. But to follow the laws, the purge gas should be captured and contained. It's only going to cost you $100 or so either way.

Or you can do it yourself for about $26. worth of 134a. 1st purge system very slowly so as not to bleeed any oil out. The 134a that you are venting is supposed to environmental friendly. I used the hose that goes on the 13oz. cans of 134a that you can buy at any auto parts store, while you are there buy 2 13oz cans of 134a. Hook this hose to the low pressur side and open the valve slowly untill you get a good hiss. the bleed could take a couple of hours if you do it slow. After the sys is empty, push in both Scharder valves to make sure, remove the hose and put rubber plug in the condenser where the old hose disconnected. to dis connect the old hose from the condenser I made a tool out of the metal I used when I covered the trim on my house. So this tool will be a piece of metal approx 1" X 2.5" rolled around a 3/8 ratchet extention. Slip this around the old pipe where it ties into the condenser and push it up to expand the spring that retains the pipe. Pull the pipe down and replace it with the rubber plug. Disconnect the old hose at the compressor and reconnect the new one. Hook up a can of 134a and open it slowly untill gas comes out of the end that hoohs to the condenser, run enough gas to purge all the air out of the compressor and new line. While flowing gas remove pluge and push line on to the condensor untill it clicks into place. If you bought 2 13oz cans start the car and dump all of the can that is hook up. A fully charged sys has .55 kg ( look at the sticker under the hood ) which is about 19oz of 134a. After you have dumped the 1st can you need to add another 6 oz, DO NOT OVERFILL THE SYS. To do this hook the hose to a fresh can and weigh it, add 6oz of 134a from this can and you are done. good luck

Is it possible to have the system drained at a local garage, drive the car home and do the kit install.. Then drive the car back to get the system recharged? Just worried if the compressor will burn itself out or something?

I brought it to an auto a/c shop and said "I need this changed before I can put on my turbo kit." He had it back to me before lunch time.
