This past weekend I went to the 300ZX Nationals at Z1 Motorsports and ran into a slight problem that freaked the crap out of me. It rained on the 1.5 hour trip there and me and a friend decided to wash our cars for the show. About 2 minutes from Z1, we go to a gas station to hand wash our cars and use the sprayer to spray it off. I must back up a bit first. I relocated my air filter on my Vortech setup to right above the intercooler a few weeks ago and forgot about doing that. Well, when washing my car, I sprayed the nozzle right into the intercooler to get any crap out of it that may have flown into it. I forgot that the filter was right there and I thoroughly soaked it. I didn't realize this at the time.
So we leave the car wash and I am driving in manual mode as usual. I am an automatic in case you were wondering. I rip thru 1st and 2nd (people are watching so I had to show off a little) then the tach is climbing in 3rd when at about 3500-4500 RPMS, the power just died. I did not move my foot in the throttle, but the RPMs just died off and the car started spitting and sputtering and would not exceed about 40 MPH. I also noticed my wideband reading lean off the gauge!!
That also freaked me out. So I limp to Z1 and expose my filter to a little warm air. I thought I had blown my motor when I first experienced this, but luckliy I hadn't!
I ended up having to drive part of the way home, under 3500 RPMs in order for the entire intake tract to dry out from the water that got ingested. After about 50 miles of driving, I hit it hard and no issues. It drove like normal. I took it up to redline twice in a parking lot and she is now all better!
So, basically as a PSA, DO NOT SPRAY WATER INTO YOUR AIR FILTER. This form of water injection is not a good thing!

Man, then i wonder about this guys selling the auto water injection kits and how they say it helps... Weird Guess it's all about the amount of water in the intake choking the engine...
