Default I got a used block VQ40 what to do with it????

Hey guys i have a friend that works at nissan and he had an engine laying around he told me that it was from a 350z. I was like give it to me i can use it. So i get it and take it home as i start looking i see that the block says VQ40 but it looks identical to my Z motor so i didnt really give it thought. Is this a 350z block or another VQ motor? If it is another VQ mortor which VQ is it and can i use it. Im strippin it down to see how r the internals. To see if anything can be used. Let me know thanks.

it's not a 350z motor. it's a VQ40, that's what it says, right? So, how do you think that would make it from a 350z?

chances are its from either a pathfinder or a frontier. IIRC it's a stroked VQ35 essentially.

Actually that's not quite true. The block itself is taller than a VQ35 block..so it might be a tight squeeze under the hood of the Z with the heads and intake manifold on the car.

You might be able to use the crank and rods to stroke the VQ35.

block's taller cuz it's stroked

I'd say, you're better off building a 35 and overboring than using a motor with a longer stroke (tends to hate higher revs more)

besides, it's probably not any stronger than the 35, still open deck, basically the same internals, materials wise.

HE just has a VQ engine lying around and he was able to just give it to you? That doesn't sound right.

He told me the block was in the Z. The owner of this Z or whatever car it was has bought like 7 cars from nissan they say that the problem was that the guy did not change the oil on the car as often as he should. He told me that the car would smoke a little in the morning and then it would go away. He told me that they change it becouse the guy was a good customer but the motor was still good.

BTW do you guys know from what car this motor is.

I dont know what should i do with sell it to someone that wants it, sell it as metal, or just though it away.

Cause i really cant use it for nothing else right maybe like the crank and the bottom block can be used correct.

if it's a VQ40 it didn't come from a Z, that's a fact.

if its true that the decks are taller, then i dont imagine the 350z intake manifold bolting up anyway. a taller deck would bring the 2 intake manifold flanges further apart from one another.

uh...no. A stroked motor still has the original block. For example the 4.3L stroker kit for the 350Z 3.5L VQ still uses the 3.5L block...the 4.0 is a DIFFERENT block. The deck on this block is actually taller, and that along with a slightly larger bore is what allows the 4.0L displacement without going too much out of square on bore and stroke.

That block will not work in the 350z without major modifications. Our heads do not bolt up to it as well. Last year i ordered a Vq40 and tried it. Also Bell housing is different so tranny won't work either. However, the pistons were nice, they are low compression 9:5:1 i believe. They looked great. The block is taller like Bri said. It would of been sweet if it would drop right in. You could probably run close to 600whp maybe with that setup.

Plus, you would have to modify the timing chain because of the taller deck height. I personally think you are better off stroking a VQ35. In the end, it'll cost you less and work the way it should.
