The cost of L19 studs compared to 1/2" studs including the machining, down time, etc is roughly half as much.

For comparison, 1/2" studs for a Supra including parts, labor, etc is $750. Should not be much different for the VQ. Don't forget the down time on waiting for your machine shop to get back to you.

Assuming that your engine is already installed in the car, labor would be roughly $1500-$1600. It's basically the cost of a cam install, plus another hour to install and setup the studs correctly.

If you have a new shortblock that you are planning to install, there woud be no extra labor involved, since these studs would simply drop in without any mods.

 

Thanks Sharif. I'll sit back and watch for a while and see how these things do on other people motors before taking the plunge. I would hate to spend $2,100 and still have problems. How many orders have you got so far? Any idea on when those orders will be installed and running?

 

About 10 sets of shipped to various people, so I imagine it will be a few weeks before they are installed and running. The process is very straightforward, so I know they will work!

Very soon, I imagine. There is nothing really to test, other to insure that 90-95 ft/lbs is sufficient clamping force. For their stated purpose (maximizing clamping force on on unsleeved, unmodified block), there should work just fine.

I would still consider doing 12mm or 1/2 inch studs on sleeved blocks.

 

We've got about 6 sets left from the first batch of 20 sets.

 

Should work just fine? What are the chances that these studs don't hold the heads down as well as the regular ARP studs?

 

No chance whatsoever. They are 40% stronger.

 

What about the thread pitch? Aren't they same as stock. Wouldn't having the same OEM thread pitch while campling them down so much cause they to eventually strip out?

 

We tested the standard ARP stud to 110ft/lbs before the threads broke. So torqueing them down to 90ft/lbs is well within an acceptable range of L19, with factory threads in the block.

The sleeved block 700whp+ crowd would probably still consider 12mm studd upgrades. For the majority of people in the 500-700whp range, these will be suitable.

One interesting point, is that the 12mm studs do not require you to drill your heads, or your gasket.

 

So only the block has to be drilled and taped? Thats interesting.

 

ummmmmm, the stock size holes in the head are 11.80-11.9mm

the stud requires approx. 40 thousandths clearance to get the head on with ease...so, approx 1mm additonal clearance in diameter... the clearance in the head should be: 12.8mm+

if the 12mm stud is smaller than 12mm, then I assume it would be an extremely tight fit, probably requiring installing the studs through the head, after it is placed on the block/ vs fitting the head over the studs...

It fits...I just shipped off a set 12mm studs to someone, or else I would whip them out and measure them myself.
