Default F/I Install Questions

Just a couple questions about FI and buying a kit

1. I live in CA and I have to be CARB Legal. So am I limited to Greddy TT or Vortech SC?
2. I need reliability since its a daily driver. Would the vortech leave my stock engine in a more reliable state? Do I need to replace any of the internals?
3. Im am mechanically inclined and I have a ton of tools. I have installed headers, intakes, water pumps but never a turbo or supercharger. Are these kits a do-able install?

Im not looking to have the most power of any Z out there but I want more than stock and I dont plan on doing my own tuning so I doubt I need a UTEC or stand alone system. How hard is it to install a supercharger or turbo?

the only FI kits that are CARB legal are the vortech and stillen s/c so if you want carb stay away from ST or TT's.

Like Gman said, the Vortech and Stillen are the only FI kits out there with CARB certification. The install of these is not overly complicated as Vortech provides a pretty decent install manual with their kit (not sure about Stillen). I suggest everyone do their own installs to learn as much as they can about their vehicles as well as save a ton of cash. We just installed two Vortech kits this past weekend.

been there.. done that.. if you can have someone else do it.. have them do it..

its annoying as hell and very time consuming... i guess if you have the time you can do it..

i have done turbo kits, engine swaps.. transmission swaps, suspension, stereo installs... i say if you can have someone do it.. have them do it

I wouldn't wait around to find out though. Most likely like HKS where they will just list CARB pending forever.

Same thing with the Greddy kit and APS. I wouldn't hold my breathe on it though.

Does the intercooler do much with the vortech or could I buy the kit without it and then decide later wether or not I want to add it?

Vortech doesn't sell a "kit" without the intercooler.

I would not run ANY focrd induction kit on this car without an intercooler. Its just not worth it. BTW I don't even think you can get the Vortech without the intercooler so that may not even be an option for you..

FULL kit comes with everything needed to install.

TUNER kit does not come with the FMU, fuel pump and SS box.

SCs are simpler in terms of installation than a Turbo. vortech comes with an intercooler and it's own pulley.

This is an interesting topic... if you have a built engine (or not) and you install a TT or an SC, will the TT or SC cause your car to fail emissions? (any state)...
Also, does replacing the cats with test pipes also cause your car to fail an emissions test? Not sure if this is the case at all, but if so what have others done to get a "pass"?

Installing a turbo or s/c will not necessarily cause you to fail emissions when it comes to the sniffer test. The catch to that is that here in CA you have to pass a visual test as well. This means that all the parts on the car have to be CARB certified with an E.O. number on them or they are not legal. Replacing the cats with test pipes will fail your for sure on both the sniffer and the visual.

Says who...it took far less time for a buddy of mine to install a Turbonetics kit then a Vortech.
