Default APS ST -- A Little Smoke

I have had my APS ST on my 2005 G35 AT for about a year. To date, I have had no problems with the Turbo and am making some decent numbers on a really conservative tune. (I do have a pesky service engine light that keeps on coming on ever since I installed the SSV, which I intend to scrap.) I am pushing about 370+ at the rear wheels. I rely only allow an authorized APS tuner to touch my car. I have nothing but good words for APS.

However, last week, my car started smoking up like a chimey while running at a relatively modest speed on the 405. I immediately pulled the car over and had it flat bedded to my tuner shop. Mind you, I am freaking, thinking the motor is toast.

I get word today that a defect is with a part related to the oil supplying the turbo; apparently the part burned out causing the smoking problem. I am a little pissed because APS apparently has replaced the same part on a lot of cars. Apparently, there is a high failure rate with the part.

Once I find out the exact part, I will post it so that other APS owners can get it replaced.

Thanks; my tuner already had the part sent and APS is sending them additional parts in the event of another failure.

Oh boy, where were you when the hell broke loose about the check valve? Now APS ST kit has an electronic solenoid, NOT the check valve, because many of them failed to work properly. I just replaced my check valve with the electronic solenoid as well as a precaution. You'll be good to go once it's replaced. By the way, what boost level are you running?

It sounds like you already have what you need on the way

I agree wit Zivman. I think they are sending you the electronic solenoid. When the check valve fails, they don't replace it with another check valve, instead they send out the electronic solenoid.

Upon further reflection. . . .

They told me the Oil Scavenge pump failed; fortunately, they agreed to replace it with a new one, but I had to pay the labor for the install.

I am very pissed.

i was about to say, a check valve wont cause a smoking turbo.
Oil scavenger pump, now that will cause oil to buildup inside the turbo and breach the seals as it will not be draining correctly out of the turbo. Make sure ur turbo isnt toast too now.

Actually the check valve did cause a smoking car as the oil was not being stopped from draining back into the bearing housing after the car and pump were shut off.

Once again, thank you for correctly me. I was assuming the check valve was checking something else, other then the oil. Never seen one used in this situation actually!

Me neither. Unfortunately due to the location of the turbo the pump had to be used and a check valve was used to stop the oil from reversing flow into drain fitting of the bearing section. It failed and as a result the backed up oil in the bearing housing over time blew through the seals. They use a solenoid now I think...
