Thumbs up Built Engine Setups...Post Yours

I thought this may be a good way to see eachother's built engine setups and compare componets and gather opinions on what works and what doesn't. This may even be useful for those who have yet to build thier engines and are looking for a starting point.
  • Post Setup:
  • Amount of Boost:
  • WHP / TQ Numbers:
  • Costs
  • Your Opinions on your setup:
  • Problems:
  • What componets you wish you would have used instead (If Any)
  • Future Modifications:
  • Etc.

-SGP Built Longblock
-CP 8.5 CR pistons, Pauter rods, ARP 7/16 stud kit, Full Ferrea valvetrain w/ 1mm oversize valves, port and polish heads, Koyo radiator, Apexi air separation tank, ARC Oil catch can, oil cooler
-615whp/ 597 tq on 93 octane
-around $20K
-very happy with all of the components (see wish list for changes made)
-minor headlift
-L19 7/16 ARP studs, Cometic headgaskets, RevUp oil pump
-Future mods (in progress) - L19 studs, SVR Tech headlift bolt kit, Cometic HG's, RevUp oil pump

- If I was building my first motor and shooting for 550 - 600 whp, I would not do the valvetrain or the headwork. It allows the car to make more power with slightly less boost, but a very expensive addition. I would also recommend L19 (stock size) studs or 1/2" studs to avoid headlift and install SVR Tech's (overzealous) head bolt kit.

  • Post Setup:
GRD built short block on APS TT setup
    ARP head and mains
    8.8:1 CR Arias
    Eagle rods
    Stock cams
    Koyo Radiator
APS 2.5" exhaust/test pipes - have since installed the big test pipes
    upgraded actuators
Spec 2+ clutch and lightened flywheel

  • Amount of Boost: 14 max tapering to 11 at redline
  • WHP / TQ Numbers: 450 hp /480 tq
  • Costs: parts + about 40 hrs of labor
  • Your Opinions on your setup: Been fun, but a lot has been learned since my build
  • Problems:
Failed thermostat gave me a head lift scare
Pressure plate failed on my clutch
  • What componets you wish you would have used instead (If Any)
Utec from the start with larger injectors - utec wasn't released yet
    oil cooler from the start
Cosworth head gasket - wasn't available at the time
ARP L19 head studs - weren't available at the time
spec 3+ clutch to allow more head room
possibly slightly higher compression - maybe 9.5:1 - so I wouldn't need as much boost, but mainly so I wouldn't need as much fuel.

  • Future Modifications:
Right now, only the utec and injectors to allow me to hold 14 lbs to redline and get rid of the boost taper due to fuel issues
  • Etc.
If you get near mid to upper 400 whp or beyond, look into doing a 3.3 final drive swap. I just did mine and although it turns 6th into a mainly a cruising gear, 1-4 gears are much more drivable
- happy boosting

I cant imagine this car over 500hp. It's gotta be ridiculously insane. I got into a 400hp maxima before and that thing hauled a$$ with just that amount of power. You guys must have some good track stories.

Good post.

t32gzz-Its nice to see somebody running over 600whp without sleeves. How hard are you on the car? Is this your normal boost setting? If not what is and how much power at that level? Thanks...

Post Setup:Fully built shortblock, wiesco 8.8:1 pistons, crower rods cyclinders honed using torque plate, balenced, cleaned, cometic head gasket, arp main and head studs. Greddy oil catch, custom stage 2 turbonetics t66 turbo one of a kind in the US. Two step colder plugs, 750cc injectors, wallboro fuel pump. 55psi at idle and normal drive 50 at wot.
Amount of Boost:16psi
WHP / TQ Numbers: 510whp 500wtq
Costs: 25k in engine and fi mods
Your Opinions on your setup: Great setup very durable, fast, strong. Only stage 2 prototype turbonetics out there with the t66 turbo.
Problems: Boost solonoid function on the UTEC not working, had to get a apexi avcr boost controller
What componets you wish you would have used instead (If Any): A better ems, should have waited for the AEM with all of the sensors to get more accurate readings on the engine.
Future Modifications: Heads, valvetrain, lsd, brakes, cams
Etc.

the only way to get rid of my hard-on is a drive your car. What do you say?

Exclamation

Post Setup:
Darton Sleeved 3.8L, 100mm Arias ED Pistons, GTM rods, 12mm headstuds, cometic HG's, GTM port and polished heads, Tomei 268 cams, Ferrea 1mm oversized valves, ATS triple disc carbon clutch, stage II axles, AAM stage II fuel system, RC 750cc injectors, Aquamist methanol injection
Greddy TT, custom feed lines, custom steel braides return line, JWT oil pan spacer, turbos rebuilt to 60-1's, Custom 3" true dual exhaust with Tanabe mufflers, Koyo 3 row radiator, Blitz SBC-ID boost controller, HKS FCON VPRO standalone with HKS Knock AMP, Dfi gauges: EGT (probe in exhaust manifold), boost, Innovate Wideband (dual bank AFR)
101octane with water injection

Amount of Boost:
Low boost 14psi
High boost (in the future: 23-25psi)

WHP / TQ Numbers:
Low boost: 635rwhp, 537rwtq

Costs
this is the 4th motor, I have spent over $85-90K for sure, and this is doing almost ALL of the labor myslef on the last 2 motors!

Your Opinions on your setup:
I am still getting used to the bigger turbos, less kick down low, definately take a bit longer to spool, but are necessary to tune to my high boost goal of 800-850rwhp (coming soon)

Problems:
Minor oil leaks from past turbo feed and return lines
motor#1: stock motor; broke piston/rod-totalled motor
motor#2: first design Arias pistons; broke 3 ringlands
motor#3: cylinder head lift; was making 615rwhp/575tq at 16psi on too much timing and completely stock heads/cams-pushed to their limit
motor#4: current setup... look to be breaking some records soon

What componets you wish you would have used instead (If Any)
APS extreme Twin Turbo system; looks cool, like the fuel system
Done my motor#4 build from the beginning (would have saved me lots of downtime, money , and blood, sweat , and tears!!!)

Future Modifications:
HKS 1000cc injectors, more boost

Coming soon; record breaking numbers

CP pistons..8.5 to 1
Pauter rids
ARP L19 studs
HKS gaskets
Nismo Cams
Nismo valve springs
AAM return fuel
550 injectors
Vortech T-trim blower...13 to 14psi ...scaling it back to 10psi
Snow Performance W/M injection

Before the HKS gaskets , L19's , and W/M injection . I had head lift on the drivers side . Was making 420whp & 338trq Mustang Dyno. ...New dyno with new set up to come soon .

Wish I would have went with JWT cams....AND YES...If I knew I would have spent this much money...I think I should have gone TT instead . But for now Im happy with what Ive got and I'll keep trying to make it better & safer

VRT-any of you guys every dyno on a dynojet? Curious to what your #'s compare like to a dynojet in the real world, not what they "should" compare like....

Real World?

Sure, just tried to dyno on Stillen's Dynojet a few months ago and they couldn't hold the power even as low as 16.5 PSI...

Slipping in 5th gear which is the 1:1

Tried to run it in 6th gear and the dyno couldn't handle more than 170 MPH.

Ended up running in 5th and not throttling slowly until 3500 for the torque comes too strong otherwise.

Power at 16.5 PSI
Made 612 or something at 16.5 PSI

With about 1000 people watching the fiasco of trying to dyno the car without bolting on the hubs

Note:
Dynojet is tricky with huge power and we do not have a dynojet in San Diego that can handle higher than 600 WHP

Real World Enough...

?
