Default How to choose boost level

So, just about to get my Greddy kit installed on a fully built Zmotors longblock (stock heads) using 1/2" ARP head studs and HKS head gasket.

So, my question is, how do you decide how much boost to run, what are the limiting factors?

Thanks in advance,
Colin

what block did you buy? each type of build is good for a certain amount of horsepower, but I take mine till my tuner feels comfortable with the power output. I tell him to take it to the edge and then bring it back just a few notches.

I went with http://www.builtzmotors.com built long block with stock heads :-

Arias Extreme Duty 9:1 CR
GTM Rods
ARP main studs to 100ft lbs
HKS headgasket
Stock heads and cams

Will I be able to run 10-12psi on this block and if so, anyone care to guestimate what kind of power I'll be putting down (assume 2.5" test pipes and 2.5" dual exhaust)

Way to go!
I can't wait to hear how this turns out.

Now I am deciding whether to go TT or wait for the new blower Stillen is coming out with later this year.

You'll have to get it tuned and set it at a level that you're comfortable. You should learn your car when you modify it, not take every Tom, Dick, and Harry's advice, because they might be giving the wrong info.

Do what you want though, i figure you slapped down this much cash to buy this stuff, go to a reputable shop and have them give you advice, not us who hasn't seen a dyno chart for your car.

You bought a fully built longblock and you have no clue as to how much boost/power it's capable of handling? Sorry, but that's hillarious in a sad way.

So you can scan a build sheet and know what the motor is capable of? Let em guess, he should've added the power capabilities of each part and came out with a number?

cersoft,
Simply put to determine your boost level you basically need to determine your HP goal, which in turn is dependent on how well motor can handle it..

Although boost level is a factor in the HP conversion, more important is how effecient the turbo runs at that boost level. I haven't really heard of any Z owners pushing their turbo's beyond this limit so no worries there. One can easily make over 500 HP on a T66 running 12-15 psi as opposed to making 500HP on a T4 running 18-21 psi.

Since HP from F/I is just an extension/addition to the power your motor produces naturally aspirated, your best bet is to try to extract as much HP N/A then top it off with a turbo/SC. Don't let a set boost number consume you too much.

I know a few people who dyno there motors, which was built for F/I, just to find out what they can push N/A. They try to push as much as they can with what the engine was built for then throw F/I in there to bring them up to their target.

Hope this kinda helps.

You are a rookie...good name. Your engine builder will tell you what power level the motor is capable of handling.

Ok, firstly, I am asking a question because I would like to be enlightened, not to be ridiculed. I wasn't asking how much the block was capable of, or the max potential of the greddy TT kit.

I was asking, what are the factors that determine how much boost you can run, an answer to which I will no doubt not be getting from you.

Honestly Nismo350ZRT, who here really knows what these motors can handle when built to the tilt.

For all we know they could handle 35psi running a GT42 but a "built" motor ain't the only element in this equation. Who's to say the drivetrain can take this kind of power? Who's to say the cooling system is effecient enough to handle this amount of power? Who's to say you won't blow the heads completely off the block? Etc. Etc.

Don't knock him too hard bro, I think he's asking a ligitimate question.

You have upgraded fuel? If not that will be first limiting factor.
