Was your first problem the SS box or the tune on it?

I would not rule out any problem but I would check the gap on your plugs, vacuum lines and fuel pressure first. With any luck it is a simple thing. At least that is what I am hoping!

Two observations that I'd like to make a comment on: (I had the P0300 code creep up on me last week).

1.) I am changing my plugs this evening to one step colder NGK Iridiums. I'll let you guys know what condition the old ones were in. I believe that I am having insufficient spark under high rpms/high load just as TIMMAH stated in an earlier post. Hopefully this solves the problem.

2.) My co-worker, who owns a highly modified WRX occasionally gets the P0300 code as well. He has attributed it to the two ceramettalic plates in his clutch setup actually coming in slight contact with one another at high speeds. This causes the engine to seemingly misfire. The funny thing is, when I had my P0300 code turn on, I was accelerating hard and hit a small bump. This bump could have jarred the clutch discs in such a manner as to cause this MIL.

Anyways, just my $0.02. I'll get back tonight with some photos of my old plugs.

TheCajunStyle - I see you have the JWTT, those numbers look low to me. Are you just trying to be extra safe and running low boost?

Sorry to be off topic feel free to send me a PM if that is easier.

Remeber, the SS Box is locked. GRD is not capable of reprogramming it without me losing my warranty. GRD did find that the SS BOX was bad and Stillen sent out a new one. Case in point - SS Boxes are weak.

Right now it's only my belts that I am having issues with. Oh well, this thread isn't about me, but you and your car, keep us posted. Tim, how do we go about changing the plugs? Do we have to take the SC and plenum off?

no you dont have to take off the s/c or plenum.cmon guys it is a simple job to replace the plugs. just un plug the coilpacks and unbolt the coil packs, remove the spark plugs.just make sure to use antiseize on the new plugs.

Dang, I didn't realize that it was that easy. I've never needed to change them before. My old 240sx se was a snap to change. What gap do you recommend?

Yeah the plugs are easy to change. No blower removal needed. It took me about an hour to change the plugs but I did not change the gap so now I need to take them out and re-gap them. Probably tomorrow or Thursday night.

As for the SS box I never thought it was weak, I just always was annoyed that it could not be re-programmed at all. The normal SS boxes have a serial port on the side to change them. The Stillen box was made without the port so it can't be changed even if you do void the warranty. It sucks but it's the safe Stillen way...

So yesterday I pulled my plugs and moved the gap down to ~35 (stock is 44), changed my oil and got my water/meth kit going again. So far, so good with no flashing CEL at WOT near redline.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a few more days.

That was what I thought but I turned the kit off two weeks ago and got it again last week. The water/meth kit did have the wrong sprayer on it and was spraying too much water. I am hoping it was a combination of the plugs, water, and phoenix heat causing it to ping.

Either way, I appreciate the optimism.

Update:

So it has been about two weeks since I re-gapped my plugs, fixed my water/meth kit and looked everything over. I have driven the car hard many times up to 7k rpm 1-3rd gear and have not had the problem come back. It appears to be fixed.

Thanks everyone for your help! This forum rocks!

Damn, it seems like everyone is getting the p300 if they go FI. When does yours turn on? Mine seems to turning on when I start up the car to let it warm up. It gets a little shakey and bam, the lite turns on. There's only a slight blip at idle but every other gear is fine. Anyone know what's up with this?

I HAD this problem. Everytime I would strat the car and let it warm up the check light would come on. Now that Im selling the car I wanted to tone the car down a bit. I put the stock exhaust and cats back on. Guess what, no more check light! Its now been about a month and notta! Even with the turbo cams still installed I get no codes. I dunno why a exhaust and test pipes would do this but it does. Also note my car is a early 03.

Oh yeah! I forgot that I put on kinetix cats about the same time I started having this problem. I need to put my stock cats back on and see if that fixes it.
