Default ok weirdest thing just happen.. tranny related

so my tranny has been grinding in 5th and 6th for a while now.. but i read a post recently that the dealer told the guy to shft slower and he would be fine.. so i was doing that and the car tranny wouldn't grind anymore..

so tonight i was running this WRX... and i went to shift into 5th.. and it grinded but got it in... but then i went to hit the gas and the car just rev'd freely.. .. went to 6th.. same story.. pulled off the highway.. 1st .. 2nd.. 3rd.. 4th was fine.. tried to shift into 5th.. it wouldn't go.. then all of sudden it did... car stalled... tried to shift into 1st.. the car was in Rev... all the other gears felt like 6th ..

i was able to get back on the highway... use the clutch to get up to speed... made it home... got off the highway.. clutched my way home.. till the clutch pedal hit the floor... shifted to neutral and noticed that it was like 4th Gear...

....

I let the car sit for 2 hours... then i tried to drive it again.. 1st .. 2nd.. 3rd.. and Reverse were fine... i didn't try the other gears because i didn't want to get away too far from home..

...

any ideas? i am baffled as to why the transmission got confused.. and why all of a sudden after letting it sit.. its back to normal

Same thing happened to my G but it was 3rd gear, all the other gears worked perfectly fine but 3rd just rev'd with no response. I tried to wait it out but the problem never fixed itself. I ended up getting the tranny replaced by one of the Infiniti techs after hours, luckily they had an extra one sitting around and they gave me a good deal. (warranty had expired)

Their gonna fight you tooth and nail on the tranny warranty issue..Sound like the tranny is going, or you overheated the clutch..I would think the first of the two, since you were in a higher gear when it happened, ususally clutch slipage and overheating occur off the line in lower gears..Your tranny did feel a bit NOTCHY and seeing how your car was an 03' it makes sence that there is a tranny isssue as me and Jason had going through 3 trannys each.
Welcom to the neverending world of F/I on the Z.. Youll get the tranny fixed then your axles will snap..

if it is just fifth and sixth gear, i might be that white plastic piece that guides the shifter into the gears on the right side. mine was a bit crooked and until i straightened it out, 5th and 6th werent very smooth...

Change the fluid like suggested above. If you did in fact damage the tranny you will see metal shaving in your old fluid.

Default Fluid change

If you're going to try to get your tranny changed under warranty DON'T change your fluid. That gives them grounds to claim you didn't replace the fluid with the proper type and that led to the failure.
