Talking 800+whp Engine Build Almost Done...

As a # of guys are aware I have been working on a new heavy duty engine for a while now. Well, the old engine blew a little while ago and it was time to put the one together. I figured I would try to document what we have been working on for so long and how things looked after my engine blew a few months back.

AAM and I started working on building a new long block in January in preparation for my goals of +800whp. We have gone through a long (and sometimes painful) process of sending the various parts of the block/internals to different shops around the country to have sleeves, Cryo Treatment, Ceramic Coating, and machining done.

Here are is the layout of the new block:
  • JE Pistons w/enhanced wrist pins
  • Pauter Rods
  • Ferrea Comp +1mm valve kit (w/3 angle grind)
  • JWT C2 (FI) Billet Cams – 261 Dur/0.456” Lift
  • Custom Turbos (TD06 Exhaust w/60 Trim) using a Ceramic Garrett ball bearing Cartridge
  • Darton MID Sleeves
  • Nismo Thermostat
  • Nismo Competition Oil Pump
  • ARP ½” Head studs
  • Cometic Gasket
  • Q45 Cooling Modification for the Rear Passages
  • Heads were Ported/Polished & the Block was Redecked
  • Cryo Treated Internals
  • Ceramic Coating (Combustion Chambers/Valves/Headers/Pistons & Skirts)
I already have all the necessary supporting accessories:
  • HKS F-Con Pro w/ Monitor & Knock Amp
  • HKS EVC Boost Controller
  • HKS 1000 cc injectors
  • ATS Twin plate Carbon clutch
  • ATS Carbon 1.2 way LSD
  • DSS Level5 Axles
  • Upgraded Oil/Radiator/ Power Steering coolers
  • AAM’s Stage II Fuel System w
  • AAM’s True Dual 3” Exhaust w/Open Dumps & Test Pipes
  • DEI Cry02 System w/ Intercooler sprayer
  • Nitto Extreme 18x305 DR’s (trying to keep some traction under boost).
Attached are some of the pics of the parts (somewhat assembled), the Darton sleeved block on the engine stand and SwainTech coated pistons. I will post more each weekend when I can check on progress. I expect to have this done by Sep 9th for Formula D in NJ, and NOPI Nationals September 16 – 17th

I have some pics of the damaged pistons I will post next.

Default This is what happens when you use ****E GAS..!!!

OK, as most already know I did some serious damage to the engine on the trip out to Vegas. Running 89 octane at altitude and under boost was just too much for it to handle. I firmly believe that if I had not been running crappy gas, this would not have happened. Mike’s tune from AAM was running very smoothly and I have not only raced the car on the ¼ a couple of different times, but also driven the car on a # of multi-day trips up and down the East Coast with no problems on this tune AND boost level.

After taking the engine apart, 5 of the six pistons have extreme damage to the ringlands. As you can see here, there are chunks missing from 4 of the pistons and 2 of the cylinder walls have some extensive scouring that we are not sure can be repaired. There were metal shavings throughout the block, all the oil passages and the IC piping. All the piping has to be removed, washed/cleaned to remove all the excess oil and metal shavings.

You can also notice the discoloration to the engine bay, which was caused by a lose wastegate.

I am definitely glad I have been building this new block for some time now so I can have the car back up and running. After this is done, I might even start planning a replacement block for this one (just in case something terrible happens again). Learn from my experience, don’t run anything but 93. If you have to carry some race gas or a lot of Torco octane booster in the car for emergencies.

Looks great. G'luck with the project.

Cryogen treating will definitely helps. Going to blueprint and balance it as well?

Yes, it has been blueprinted and Balanced. That plus the having the heads Ported/Polished and Redecked is what took the longest time.
As for putting the power down... I might even pull the fenders a bit more and move up to 315's on the rear...

Brent, good write-up and best of luck with the build. It was fun trading mod stories and frustrations last night. Mirrors will be the finishing touch to an awesome car. I hope it gets done soon and we see you here for Z Fest in October.

I have the same basic goals as yourself (>800 whp) and can understand the frustration produced by the long and arduous process of building up a 350z like this. I had mine started back in March and am very near installing a built engine (sleeved port polish and the works) with Brian Crower stroker, APS TT, Top Secret wide body (to fit bigger meat)...

Right now the shop is fumbling through a knotted wiring harness!!!

I hope to see you at the nopi nats!

btw, how much did the swain coating cost for the pistons? I'm considering having this done on the pistons too.

Nice. Do you expect the ATS twin disc carbon clutch to hold 800+whp? On this setup you might be pushing the limits.
