Default Buying Used Turbos?

What is everyone's opinion on buying used turbos?

As of right now the only way that I could impagine buying a used turbo is if it were from someone I knew or trusted such as Sharif or Charles (not that you are trying to sell one lol).

Other than that am I wrong to be very cautious on buying used?

I am planning to more than likely just buy brand new but right now I am looking for a turbonetics T60, T66 or T70 turbo.

Thanks in advance.

find out about how much shaft play is involved, and also the rebuild cost. if you get a used one for a good price, it may need a new rebuild, and this cost varies.

also, look at the rust on the one side of the turbo.

with a new turbo you have a warranty for anywhere from 1-3 years, dont need to worry about shaft play, and its more hassle free of a purchase

Are you looking for just the turbo, or an entire kit. I have one used, but totally complete TN single turbo kit here at the shop for sale. We took them off a customer car, so I can vouch for their completeness. The customers wanted some nasty 600whp stuff...so they switched to Greddy.

If you find a turbo cheap enough, I would just have it rebuilt, as a general practice.

Yes I will be doing another setup. However, this time if have a shop that has been around for quite some time and specializes in making headers and exhaust setups for turbos and high horsepower NA setups.

Not to mention that this time I will be watching every step of the build.

After this winter when my piping is all done I will be begin the process of building the motor at which point I will be looking for a tuner to tune it with UTEC. At that point I could be trailering the car all the way across the country to get it tuned. It all depends on what tuner I choose.

Well if anyone ever seems to stumble across a Turbonetics T60, T66 or T70 turbo PM me and let me know.

Also if anyone can suggest a forum for a different car where those turbo sizes are commonly used that I could search for used ones please let me know.

Thanks!

look at supra's, skylines (if u have them in the US) and other 6cyl or 8cyl forums. mustangs, camereo, ls1, rx7/rotary etc. No stock cars come with a turbo that large. Hell u can even find T70/T67/GT35/GT40/42R's on honda-tech.com these days. They love to rev and make big hp with big turbos. There are plenty of sponsors/dealers on ht with access to new turbos too.

Stay away from ebay specials. Turbos can look good, have no shaft play but be unbalanced and grenade themselves within seconds of boost. be weary, be smart, and u will find urself a deal

350Z Manual Tranny. Shaft play is perfectly normal....turbo has 6000 miles on it.
