Default Turbo/tuning ?

Maybe this has been asked already, but I didn't know how to even try and search for it.

I'm most likely going to go FI in the spring and I wanted to know:
Has anybody ever taken their FI Z/G on a long road trip? Not like a three hour trip, but more like a 20+ hour road trip. If so, do different elevations f-ck with your tune? ( ie. going from Chicago to Denver) Or were there any other issues?

thanks

Depending on where you are going, you need to be careful about what gasoline is available. What I mean is, if you are tuned for 93 octane, you may run into places with 91 octane or less. I would bring some bottles of concentrated race gas or octane booster. A while back, I saw some stuff on Torco's website that looked pretty good. I think it was $17 a bottle or so, but it was a true concentrate, not the half-as* stuff at AutoZone.

I'm sure plenty have taken their cars on long road trips. I think BamBam took his on a road rally which was quite long. Although, he did blow his motor on that trip. As far as I know, his popped motor was a combination of lower octane gas, stock block, and plenty of abuse. Sorry, that probably didn't make you feel any better .

BamBam probably sets the forum record for the number of long rallys and road trips he has taken. He has driven, literally, all over the country a few times, and his car held up well...aside from the stock engine blow up on high boost with 87 octane fuel.

I have driven a few trips in the 8-9 hour range without a problem. If your car is tuned for sea level, or close to that, you will be perfectly safe at higher elevations, albeit a little bit richer than normal....no harm it that.

Most good tuners will build in a margin of safety for a street driven car, so that changes in elevation and temperature will never result in an unsafe tune. Make sure you have a wideband AF gauge install on your car, so you can monitor your AF ratio as the elevation changes.
