Default flashing "service engine soon" light

what does it mean when the SES light flashes on you? I had it happen on the dyno and then today it happened while doing a 4th gear pull on the expressway.

I have heard that it is a spark issue......but an infiniti tech told me it only flashes when impending doom is near.

anyone have some other ideas?

Usually the SES flashes during a misfire event. You may want to double check the knock readings on your UTEC. Were you data logging when it happened?

I was datalogging. I got it to happen 2 times and both times the UTEC recorded knock. the odd thing is that the ECU wasn't pulling timing in that area....like it didn't detect knock.

BTW, where do you guys gap your plugs? stock is like .042", isn't it?

I just cheked the gaps on my NGK iridiums and they are approx. .045"

I was doing some datalogging sessions between the vero and sebastian exits on I-95. There's always cops hiding out on that stretch.

I am running NGK one step colder Iridiums gapped at ~.039..

Yup, the flashing CEL happened on our dyno....mostly in the long 5th gear pulls on the dyno. The only time I have seen a flashing CEL, is when one of my coil packs burned out. Are you still getting a specific cylinder misfire code?

no.. I checked the codes and I only had the P0300....and this happened in 4th gear on the highway. I happened up high....over 6200 rpm. I am going to gap the plugs down and see if that helps......I have the NGKs 1 step colder Iridiums. I checked the gap on another set of them. I was surpsired that they are approx. .045" IIRC, they are listed as being .042". I checked with 2 different feeler gauges, too.

My last set from Sharif came pre-gapped at .039. I checked with two gap testers as well..

Out of the box, the NGK's are pre-gapped at .039-.045, and there will probably be some mild variances between them. We leave the gaps alone, since we havent seen audible or visual spark blow out, even with larger gaps.

In your case, it might be worth a shot, in gapping them down slightly, so see if it solves the mysterious flashing CEL.

Meh, only if you know for sure the cause is spark blow out... Although stronger spark never hurt anyone I guess. I would definitely look at re-tuning shortly after install though...

I just got my car tuned with the UTEC and mine is doing the exact same thing. When I do a long 4th gear pull the SES starts flashing. I hope it is not knock!

+1 on the random flashing SES light. It usually happens to me at hwy cruising and then goes back to solid. I have no clue what it could be. I have another set of coils so I'm gonna try swapping them out and see if that fixes the problem.

One of the reason it would start flashing is the computer detects major misfire that could result in catalyst failure..
