Default exhaust note on ST, TT, and SC...

This is a tough subject to search, usually thats all i do on this site is lurk and check out posts in the suspension section and FI section.

Anyways, ive owned plenty of boosted cars and am well aware that turbos change the exhaust note, but i do have a few questions...

Most of the Z's ive heard that are turboed, IMO sound like ***...not to be rude or anything at all, i just love how the stock exhaust sounds but louder, like with test pipes, or how the topspeed exhaust sounds for example...

is there any set ups that you turbo guys are using to achieve a sound at least similar to this??? And obviously this isnt an inline engine, so its not gonna sound like a supra or RB motor, but i would be just as happy with that tone as well haha.

for the supercharged guys, the exhaust pitch is more or less the same correct? being that your set up is on the intake side...?

My JIC 3" non resonated exhaust was nice and loud and sounded very aggressive on my TN kit. Now on the Greddy kit, the APS TD 3" is just as loud if not louder and is down right mean sounding. I personally hate quiet cars so these 2 systems made me happy. For S/C guys it sounds NA maybe slightly louder than NA....remember turbo guys get about 30% quieter with any particular exhaust over NA.

my SC vortech car had every bolt on there is - cams, headers, HF cats, exhaust, intake, plenum/manifold, ported throttlebody, etc

When I added the vortech, the exhaust simply got meaner but kept the same style or tone. At WOT it is louder. With a normal idle, startup was actually slightly quieter, but when you up your idle to around 1000 rpms (mine is like 1200) then it's about the same volume at start up - maaaybe even slightly louder. Of course you can hear the SC turning too

but yeah, the sound is the same just amplified for the most part. it growls and sounds fierce. I'm really happy with how my car sounds. It isn't boomy or raspy or buzzy, but sounds like a stock Z on super steroids - my nismo exhaust has a lot to do with that too I think though.

I have mixed feelings about turbo Z's too. Some sound great, others sound like crap IMO.Hard to say why that is though - might have to do with being a ST or TT to some degree, but I've heard some ST's in person with test pipes and single 3" exhaust that sound flat out scary - though still boomy with not much growl. I like growl
The ones that are real boomy or buzzy aren't my cup of tea - which to my ears sounds very unlike a sporty Z IMO.

im not necessarily worried about how loud the car is, just more of the tone or pitch i guess...Do you have a sound clip of your car Alberto? With either exhaust set up.

i saw the couple in car videos of your car, anything from behind it? it seems like the ones with built motors/lower compression sound different than turboed cars on the stock block...not as raspy i guess.

FI cars are definatly more muted, I miss the song of the NA Vq, but you know what sounds meaner....dualing waste gates.

3 words....open wastegate dumps

I absolutely love the sound of my TT kit with custom 3" true duals and wastegate dump. I have gotta a ton of positive comments on the sound of my car and not a single negative, needless to say, that makes me happy.

Here is the TN set-up outside of the car--damn I loved how it sounded

Here is TN inside car:

Here is the Greddy set-up low speed cruising (so mean IMO) and a quick outside car punch. End of video is in car. Keep in mind the REALLY loud part are the open dumps. Also click either link in my signature to listen to the in-car WOT open dump better... (especially the 150mph run)

Nice vids, still doesn't sound as sweet and in-tune as a NA car with some good pipes, but still sounds good.
