Default Some Show and Tell...

Well, after taking a few month hiatus and playing around with my STI - I've decided it's finally time to get my G35 back together.

My new motor is all together and making it's way back into my car - the goal is to have it running by Thanksgiving and get some break in miles on the car...

Here's a breakdown of the additions/enhancements from my last setup:
  • Turbos upgraded from the stock PE IHI turbos, to Garrett GT28RS...
  • The head work is the same HeadGames Race Port with the addition of pyromint exhaust valves...
  • The new block has Darton Liners vs. my other block has the Darton MID kit...
  • The fuel system (which was falling on its face at high boost levels) has been upgraded to AAM's stage 2 systems...
  • New intercooler piping to accommodate the new turbos & remove the PE flow restrictions...
  • Head Studs upgraded to ARP 1/2" studs...
  • Nissan Pathfinder cooling mod...

Here's some pics -

backyard shop or not, i don't care as long as the work is done right.

What's with the Darton liners? I don't know anything about them. Why liners vs. sleeves?

With out getting into a debate over which is better - They both have been prove to work at power levels below 1200whp... The fact that testing showed the car runs cooler with the liners vs. the MID sleeves was why I choose to use them in this block...

I'm assuming there's a big price difference between the two? I'm not debating, I just didn't know anything about the liners, haha

actually, no - they cost pretty much the same amount of money for the liners and the install... the block still needs to be machined, bored, etc...

Just curious why you went with the liners. In the grand scheme of things, does a 10 degree coolant temp delta make a difference in the life of the engine? Even if it did, a thermostat and radiator could fix remedy it. To my knowledge, no one has ever cracked a stock cylinder wall (please correct me if I am wrong). I thought the real problem was with the open deck configuration and cylinder float compromising the HG seal. I assume that clamping the heads down much harder helps that, but it seem like allot of money to spend without fully addressing the deck issue. I know you said the liner have proven superior at reasonable power levels, but does that apply in the open deck platform of the VQ?

Your setup appears well thought out; I am really just looking for your reasoning for using the liners.

In any case, good luck getting everything back together.

I think what Phily is trying to say, is that the drag race teams and others, have tested the Darton liners below the 1200whp mark, and found them to work very well. That said, choosing liners over of sleeves would be like flipping a coin. He chose the liners due to the lower coolant temps....from what he observed.

Did I basically get that right?

Yep, that's basically it... They both work and do their job on power levels below 1200whp, so on this particular block I decided to go with the liners given they run a bit cooler...

I've done all of the cooling mods, bigger radiator, Pathfinder coolant mod, oil cooler, etc... Every bit helps on a street car...

Hmmm. The whole liner thing make me wonder if this might be in store for my next build.... I've been looking to go ballz out with the MID set, but the cooling factor is very tempting given my power new power goals.

The Liners are very beefy and the way I see it, 850whp is going to be the ceiling given my turbo choice. Realistically, it was ridiculous driving around with 600whp on my old PE IHI Turbos on the street - so after the giggles of pushing for some big dyno #'s, the boost will be turn down for a nice 550whp tune...

Oh, did I mention that Jeff Evans and Sharif are going to tune the car

Here's a couple more pics...

Here's a picture of my other block before the MID kit was installed - I couldn't believe how much material was taken out of the block...

this looks like a very nicely thought out approach and build.
Are you going to go with a preset programmable boost controller, like a Blitz, so that you can dial your boost levels to your desires?
I suspect you can manage 550rwhp on 93 octane premium pump gas and about 14-16psi on those Garretts, then when you want some more zip just tank up on 100 octane unleaded and dial up the boost to 18+psi if you want.
Are you going to do anything to the cooling like an iso thermal plenum spacer, thermal barrier and dispersant coatings, increased oil capacity etc etc?
The thermal management issues are very important on these boosted motors and your decision on the liners for temp makes a lot of sense.
Great pictures too. Thanks for sharing, and I look forward to more instalments on the build!

Blitz SBC-iD IColor Dual Solenoid Boost Controller

The PE kit came with a really nice oil pan with baffles and added oil capacity - I'll take some pics tomorrow. I'm currently using the Crawford plenum, the Pathfinder cooling mod, Koyo race Radiator, oil cooler, trans cooler, etc...
