Default Play in turbo shaft ???

I recently removed the front clip and a/c from my car ( and yes phunk the " green stuff " was pretty fun to deal with ). Well I have the whole front off i decided topull off piping and see how the turbo's were looking. On the drivers side the shaft has a little bit of play when wiggled up and down or left to right. My question is what kind of tolerance is safe, should there be absolutely no play or is a small amount of play ok ? Total play seems to be maybe 1/32 ".

a little play is fine, just check for any signs of leaking.

the side to side shaft play should be minimal but the front to back should be zero.

As an aircraft mechanic for the last 20 years I know that spinning shafts are usually lubricated by grease fittings, over time the greese needs to be reapplied . One sign of this is play in the shaft, if he said" yes there is a high pressure greese point" I would have suggested he service it and see if the play went away. Maybe the turbo's shaft is lubed by oil, and in that case my idea is mute, but it wasn't harmful to him and could have solved the issue.

Haha, I am friends with a few " Military Mechanics ". They even admit they didnt learn or no much about mechanics, for the first 3 years they got to change alot of oil and rotate alot of tires.

Yes, I am a pilot and hang out with alot of AnP's i know most systems pretty well... ther are fittings as you speak of on other shaft driven devices but I dont think even aircraft turbochargers have greese fittings since the heat is so high and most lithium base i would think would burn up.

I don't work on turbo props, so I don't know what they use.

Turbo props have no turbo chargers, easy mis nomer...

a turbo prop is still a jet engine (kerosine burning) with a prop attached to the shaft, a turbocharged aircraft engine is a horizontally opposed (most the time) and gasoline powered engine much like the auto world and has a similar turbo setup as a car only differnce is the wg's are oil pressure regulated often times and there isnt usually factory water cooling.

I only know Jets, I have never poped the cowl on anything with a prop.

Its all good Sean!

Its funny If working on engines was my job, Id fight it every day, however its a hobby, I spend all waking hours learning more about them! That why I fly , its a job that was a hobby! I still can have fun and get paid to do so! Its a dream come true.
