Default Garrett Actuators Suck!!! Do not Buy!!

Well after spending thousands of dollars on a built motor, turbo system, etc, etc, etc I have ran into another problem with the Garrett Actuators I purchased from Torquefreaks. These actuators are supposed to come with 10lbs springs and with a decent boost controler you should be able to get atleast 17 lbs out of them with no problem. Well hauling my car to Atlanta to see Sharif at Forged for a custom tune the car would only boost 12psi and with the boost controler off it would only do 7 psi.. So at this point I have not only wasted money on a custom tune but crappy actuators so any and all thinking of purchasing these cheap Garrett Actuators needs to buy the Forged ones instead to save yourself alot of time and money... And just for the record I did in fact call Torquefreaks and they just blew me off like a cheap ***** on a saturday night... Thanks for listening and allowing me to vent a bit..

Cheers,
brooke

Are you sure the actuator arms are set properly? I had the same ones and held 17 psi no prob on my APS kit, and with the boost controller off I was seeing between 10 and 11 psi. So, you can't just make a statement that they SUCK.

Sorry to hear though man. Check those actuator arms, they probably just need to be tweaked some.

Of course I made sure the arms had the same tension... I also managed to swap the motor myself and install the turbo kit along with a tranny and 2 clutches...

seeing how Garrett uses the same actuators on all of their OEM applications, I would not say they suck. One of 2 thiings seem like it happened.
#1) TQ freaks sent you the wrong part #
#2) there is not enough tension on the rod

The tension is correct but now whatever the case I'm going to have to get in there and take them out... I should have bought the forged actuators....

brooke, that really sucks about the actuators. I really don't understand why they're such a problem on the APS TT kit. The JWT TT uses internal wastegates and I've never heard of any issues with actuators on those kits.

Cant you just swap out to stiffer springs in the actuators?

Not the Garret ones, their a sealed design. This is what is nice about Forged Motorsport Actuators, they are rebuildable..And pretty.

Hmm. I also find it hard to believe that the problem is with a Garrett manufactured item. But anything is possible.

it sucks when you go in for a tune and things don't go as planned, but this could have easily been avoided. It is common knowledge that you need to go with a bit stronger than normal actuators on the APS kit. My 12 lbs forge actuators will peak to about 17, maybe up to 18 and hold 14 lbs at redline. this is with the APS 3.5" test pipes and 2.5" exhaust. So what you stated in your post is what I would have expected.

If you are running the 3" exhaust, you should have no problem making 14-15 lbs, if not more.
