Default Few Questions about the Vortech

hey guys i think im going to join the FI world soon, lol
i just dont know if i should get the full kit or just the tuner

i wanna thank this guy making this thread
https://my350z.com/forum/forced-induction/259047-muzzy-s-vortech-install-ton-of-pics-guide-for-future-fi-z-s.html
its what really made me decide to go FI, lol

do u guys think its worth it to get the full kit or just the tuner?
i think the tuner doesnt come with the fuel return and management?
the full kit comes with these i believe right? but i guess they arent good if u want more power?
this guy said he coulda saved some money if he got the tuner, but isnt a utec like $800 + another grand or so for an AAM or CJ fuel return system?

my goals are basically like his, around 380whp or something
i hope i can get some feedback from u guys
thanks so much!

If 380whp is all you'll need . Then the full kit and the 3.12 pulley will get you there cheaper than a tuner kit and the supporting mods you would have to buy and install .

Boogers suggestion is right on, however going with the 3.12 pulley (stock is 3.33) investing in larger fuel injectors and also larger fuel pump will provide some margin in the fuel delivery and help with the A/F ratio particularly if you plan on dyno tuning. The Split Second box that comes with the standard kit provides the timing and fuel during boost so no additional management sysytem is necessary but is programmed fuel rich and so tuning is recommended.

As for fuel return system, again not critical, many cars have been running without one , but if you have the cash and want additional safety/security it can only help. But if you decide to add larger inj's and fuel return syatem, wait to tune after they are installed..Good luck

380whp [ DynoJet numbers ] can easily be made with out going to larger injectors and a return fuel system . If Vortech had thought it was UNSAFE to do its fuel supply the way they do . They wouldnt have done it that way . It depends on what FMU you get also . The FMU with a 8 to 1 washer in it , will be able to supply more fuel than the 6 to 1 FMU . But for the power he is seeking , the 3.12 and a good tune is all he'll need with either FMU that comes with the kit he gets .

Sounds to me like you're jumping into the FI world without any real knowledge of what it involves. Do some research on how a supercharger works. Read the threads involving the s/c.

I generally don't find myself disagreeing with the booger but with the smaller pulley and my experience with the 3.12 pulley I found my car's A/F to be heading north when it was on the dyno at 390 hp..Speaking of the Vortech fuel supply system I think it sucks (FMU/Aux fuel pump) and is less reliable than replacing it utilizing 440 inj's and a walbro. Less parts and no worry with fuel lines coming lose or contamination getting into the FMU as a few posters have experienced.

I didnt say it was perfect . Like I said , it also depends on the FMU you get . 8 to 1 or 6 to 1 . The only fuel systems that I have heard of failing or having trouble with . Are ones that werent installed correctly to begin with . And there is always , with any aftermarket system or parts . The bad apple in the bunch .
I havent had any hands on with a 6 to1 FMU , but the 8 to 1, I had a good A/F at redline and plenty of head room left when at the 380whp [ Dynojet ] level .
In a perfect world....yes , a return fuel system and bigger injectors would work the best and be the safest way to do it . But if you look at all the F/I kits on the market [ except extreme kits ] . What kit goes to that level of safety ? None !
Like most of us that get started in the F/I market . You take steps...starting with a basic kit . Then you improve on that kit as you get to the point you want more power [ some guy are satisfied with a basic kit ] The idea is to learn as you go . If you want a full out monster right off the bat and dont want to learn about how it all goes together . Have a deep wallet and just give the car to your shop and tell them to do what ever is needed to get what you want . And when a LITTLE problem arises , have a bunch of more money to have your sop go through the car to find out whats wrong . My point is , the more you know the more you can fix things your self and be able to tell the shop where the problem is most likely at .

Yeah but you do have to deal with the siphon on the stock fuel assembly. Seems like people with the Vortech have fuel issues no matter which way they try.

i sent you a pm back for your questions on the Vortech kit differences.

if thats all you want, the full kit will be fine, if you want to ever upgrade then i would do a tuner kit plus utec, with a cj motorsports return fuel system.

good luck and i have it all waiting to ship out to you!!

thanks

Booger, I think you would agree that less parts (FMU/Aux fuel pump/fuel lines) would be more reliable than more parts. Since you can't eleminate the need for inj's and a fuel pump , if you size them properly you eleminate the additional parts and gain reliability.

Nice to have a shop that is honest and up front . That is not always trying to sell extra parts and labor !

Jeremy...hows that N/A monster running ? Any new dyno numbers ?

THE TECH, if you are referring to the fact that you have to drill a hole in the Walbro as well as the siphon jet to get the fuel pressure down to around 50psi yeah your right.

Yes ..I agree with that . But that isnt what we are talking about . We are talking about a guy that doesnt want more than is needed .

well thanks for the complement to my thread!

That is exactly what I was trying to do with it, for other members to tackle their own FI project, and glad it worked.

to clear things up a bit for you with your question of TUNER VS complete KIT

I highly like the vortech complete kit it is streight forward and does its job well and the power you are going to see with it is around the 350rwhp mark.

but I wanted to hit my goal of 400 hence I went with the 9psi pully. you can upgrade to the 9psi pully real easilly and after a tune you will see that your fuel delivery is maxing out and your going lean around 6k rpm. for a peace of mind you will need to upgrade your injectors and the FMU. I simply said that if I wanted to save some cash I would have went for a tuner kit and bought the FMU and uteck seperetly. The tuner kit is around 1k-1.5k cheaper and the uteck and such will defenetly cost more but I wouldnt have wasted money on parts that I was going to replace.

My advice to you is that stick with the vortech s/c full 7psi KIT and get other supporting mods to get your goal of 380rwhp. someone just posted that they got 373rwhp with vortech kit and runing 7psi thats it.

hope that helps and thx again for thecompliment. FYI I will have my final # 4-16 im hoping for 420-430rwhp (I hade to upgrade fuel pump >< wasted $ on vortechs fuel setup)

Sorry, but could you expand on this a bit? I just bought all the parts that I think I am going to need for the Vortech kit and this caught my eye. I purchased the following already.

1. Vortech (used so I guess I'll have to deal with missing parts and whatnot).
2. Utec.
3. Zeitronix with map sensor and EGT sensor.
4. One step colder spark plugs.
5. 440cc RC injectors.
6. Walbro 255lph.
7. APS oil pan.

I already have APS exhaust, RT cats, and Kinetix V5 on the car. I am thinking of doing the clutch, radiator, and headers later in that order.
