Default JWT TT getting impatient

When is JWT TT going to get CARB certification? Or is it even going to get certified? I'd been waiting for it since I got my G in 2004 and until now, it is not CARB certified yet. Looks like the GT-R will be out first before JWT will get CARB certification, if ever it gets certified. Am I waiting for nothing here?

That's one of the disadvantages living in California.

Probably around the same time that the APS TT gets carb approved.....Never. Seriously if it hasn't been approved by now, I don't think they will ever get approved. APS hasn't been trying as long as JWT, but JWT has been at it for a while.

I live about 4 blocks away from them so a few weeks ago I stopped by there to ask just that question. What I asked them was if I was to buy the TT would I be ok for CARB in 2 years when I'd be needing my first smog test, their answer was to not buy it. From what answers I could get was there is an issue involving a "warm-up" cycle. The possibility of certification for the early models is a better possibility.

I'd really like a turbo setup but living in california and wanting to keep the car registered makes that difficult.

^^^ +1 ... cold start is always the problem. Your engine (even N/A) always runs rich on cold start, and apparently the turbo system runs "too rich" for CARB approval.

I honestly don't think Jim is working to hard on it anymore.

Jim did everything under the sun to make it pass but the start up standards are just too stringent.

If it was possible Jim would have done it.

I heard the problem is that the cats don't heat up fast enough at start up. They tried ceramic coating on the inside of the exhaust manifolds and that helped some but not enough.

The cats not heating up fast enough has always been an issue with not OEM TT cars. But the cat lighting up issue is for satisfying the requirements for getting the CARB EO #. Someone correct me if i am wrong, the JW TT kit should still pass the CA smog test??? Or is part of the smog test still testing to see whether the end results of the cats not lighting up fast enough?

yeah I wouldn't have bothered waiting for the JWT CARB approval. Stillen and Vortech took 2 years or so to get approved. The APS and JWT kit's have submitted the paperwork etc and going through the process for like 2.5 years now and still no word.

The APS kit IMO has a fat chance in hell getting approved

The JWT kit had a shot because it was using stock injectors and the SS box which the stillen and vortech both use etc...but probably wasn't enough

Part of the CA smog test includes a "visual" inspection and without an EO number for any induction modification OR exhaust mod BEFORE the cats it will fail regardless of the emissions testing.

With the global focus on environmental issues, these days, and considering that even the European Union is pressuring for an 80mph speed limit on the German autobahn due to emissions control; I don’t see any politician here sanctioning CARB approval for after market turbos anytime soon.

California that’s another world out there, with very stringent emission laws.

How does the SS box play a role in this?

It does not play any role; with stock injectors and not on boost it is as close as you can get to an N/A. In fact I would even add that it runs more efficiently when not on boost, as combustion becomes more efficient with improved oxygen intake from the compressors; and the JWT's do not vent to atmosphere.

And, for newer vehicles an OBD test is usualy performed; as the EMS will produce Trouble Codes should emission problems be present. Obviously the check engine light should be off.
