if you guys think that a reputable shop only charges $80-$120 an hour, you're dreaming. I can safely say It's a number they'd use for a guideline. They pad their price to cover unexpected workload and such. I've been quoted $250 to install an exhaust system, and I know for a fact that it doesn't take a pro shop over 2 hours for an install.

If its a bolt up exhaust and nothing needs to be welded or cut . I dont see it being over 1 1/2 hours . Anything else you want to share ?

And if the shop you are refering to is the one I think you are they don't charge $200/hr they charge $110.
Actually more like $110 hr if you drop it off, $175 hr if you watch and $220 hr if you help... (well that's what I would charge)

Cannysage,

I hope you are not reffering to us as far as the $250 for an exhaust install. I reviewed your quote and we quoted you 2 hrs of 109/hr which equals $218.00 not $250.

We usually charge 1 hr labor time for a catback exhaust but anyone who is familiar with the GReddy EVO TT exhaust knows that it is not your standard cat-back installation.

This exhaust requires you to re-locate the EVAP system and extend it with supplied hoses and shield it with heat wrap. To do a proper installation on this exhaust it does take 2 hours to complete. Therefore our quote of $218.00 is MORE than reasonable to have your $1,500 exhaust professionally installed.

Hope this clears up any confusion

Booger,

Whats the point of this thread? It is obvious that it is directed towards us and our labor charges. No one is forced to come to our facility and have their work preformed. Everyone knows what they are paying before the work is done and their are no surprises.

Our prices reflect our work and everyone knows that in life you get what you pay for. If someone feels they are being charged unfairly they can simply refuse to have the work preformed by us, no hard feelings

By the way, Thanks for referring to us as a top notch shop

Just a FYI our labor rate is $109/hr and Dyno tuning is $250/hr

good gawd george, I absolutely would not want to have a bad relations with GTM!! so don't get the wrong idea please!

But you guys did quote me $1700 for the exhaust + install and I've purchased mine for $1250 (just for parts). Upkeep of my FI'd hasn't been easy on my wallet and sometimes I find myself having to dig around for deals a bit. I know the exhaust is normally around $1500 and I got a sweet deal on it. Above anything, quality of work is top priority to me, and I wouldn't hesitate to bring my Zs in, when there are work to be done on it.

Actually Cannysage, I beleive you are mistaken again Bellow is a copy of the estimate we prepared for you. As you can see we were charging you $218 for labor and $1,335.81 for the exhaust. With tax that came out to be UNDER $1,700 installed. So by purchasing the exhaust elsewhere you seemed to have saved a grand total of $85.81.

Anyways I am glad you were able to save a few bucks

Take care,

George,

I dont think this thread is directed at GTM per se. I think your rates are extremely fair and it is alot less then I actually thought it was We charge $100 per hour for basic mechanical labor. We charge $150 for custom fabrication

I think the title to the thread explains what my intentions were

The only way this thread was directed towards GTM was when I said.....IN ANOTHER THREAD there was talk on what a fair price is to do a complete rebuild ...un-install , build motor , and re-install . The idea of the thread originated from that other thread . But directed at you and your shop ....ummm dont flatter your self .
I ended up with a great motor and a top notch install for $7,400 . Now if you and your shop feels the need to explain a $13000 price for the same thing . By all means do so . I understand labor charges maybe higher in bigger cities and the $13000 may have other work included like compression tests , tuning , and other things done . But is still way over what another TOP NOTCH shop could and would charge

I can see that in larger cities that you would be charged more per hr . But $200 hr is rediculous . I dont care how good they think they are . I would be shipping my car to Nebraska for $80 hr . And still come out on top by a few thousand

I also think Im right in saying $80 Hr. is in line in MOST states
Since this was directed towards me, I assumed you were refering to GTM since that's the only shop I've really been to in CA aside from Performance Nissan almost 3 years ago

hmm I could be wrong, but I thought the $13000 price tag included (at CA's higher hourly rate):

install EMS
initial tune/dyno time
diagnostic testing and troubleshooting
taking the engine out
taking the old engine apart
a new engine
engine install
new tune

not just:
taking the engine out
take apart engine and assemble built engine
a new engine
engine install
