Default Questions on Vortech Upgrades

I am running a Vortech Supercharger full kit on my 03 Z, I have an appointment to get it tuned in two weeks so I was wondering which upgrades I should perform?

I am gonna get a 3.12 pulley...

Do I need to do any upgrades to the fuel system?

I'm shooting for 400whp which seems as though it's maxing out the stock injectors...

Should I replace just the injectors? Or other components as well?

If you replace the injectors will it have any impact on CA smog?

Thanks!

At those power levels you are definitely at risk for over-powering the injectors, leading to detonation and KER-BLAMMO. Most the folks on these boards would recommend 440 or 500 or 550cc injectors (see the FAQ stickie by Sentry65 at the top of this section). You should consider increasing the fuel flow with an upgraded fuel pump and a good fuel return system, as well (and these should not negate your CARB number, I THINK, but we live in Texas where the pollution blows into the desert). Most of this equipment can be easily hidden from the inspectors, anyway, so good luck.

The most important thing is, obviously, A GOOD TUNE. At least that will give you the data to know just how close to the edge you are skating.

bigger injectors and fuel pump would be a very good idea.

Whoops, I stand corrected. I thought that fuel pump, fuel lines, filters, etc. did not change the CARB status until you made changes to the injectors, control of the injectors, fuel pressure, etc. (things that would actually change the nature of the combustion and the pollution by-products).

Damn shame the bureaucratic-****'s of Cali are soooooo paranoid. Of course, when you cram that many people together in that small a space, aberrant behavior is bound to show up in the politicians.

yeah even an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator is enough for a cop to send you to get your car checked out

How in the world would a cop know you don't have stock regulator? The sticker on the blower say's carb approval..

Get 650cc injectors and walbro pump for the 3.12 pulley. Mark at SGP told me that I have more than enough fuel with this setup and a return system was not necessary.

Yes without a return system you fuel pressure is not as consistent but a good tuner should be able to take care of that.

Besides the 3.12" pulley, what else are you going to do to get to 400rwhp?

If the question was a little different - "do I need fuel system upgrades when I switch to a 3.12" pulley", the answer would have been no.

I don't know. I was talking to a guy who has a vortech who has a return fuel system and even though the vortech is CARB approved, the cop saw the fuel pressure regulator and that was enough to send him to get inspected. I think I remember him saying that the cop told him if they see any fuel pressure regulator, that they're supposed to have the car get inspected because something about all CARB approved kits don't use fuel pressure regulators or something like that? I don't remember exactly

Thanks for the info guys.... I'm not so worried about visual carb testing as my friends know a few places that will pretend not to see things as long as the sniffer tests are okay...

About the Fuel Return System that comes with the vortech... Can I upgrade my in tank fuel pump and keep the fuel return setup or should I just get rid of it?

I'm starting to notice in third gear and above at over 5k rpms sometimes the engine seems to not get enough fuel or misfire... it's like a loss of power for a split second then the power comes back... is this from not having enough fuel? I haven't really pushed it since this started happening so I'm worried...

Vortech doesnt come with a return fuel system . You might just want to talk to your shop about upgrades to your system .
